    Advertising power vs. Staying power

This is a link that has been posted here before, but the graph continues to be updated, and continues to fascinate me.

A fully supported world with massive advertising power thrown behind it, vs. a completely unsupported world that has been abandoned by the company (except for LG, of course).

    http://www.google.com/trends?q=greyhawk%2C+eberron&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all

Just imagine what would happen if WotC ever put the resources into Greyhawk that they invest in Eberron. As Erik says... "When we publish Greyhawk, it sells."

ROFLMAO! Laughing I'd never seen this before, to my memory.

Wotc spent all that time and energy on Eberron and created another Greyhawk, meanwhile doing almost nothing with the actual Greyhawk they already had and which was leading the RPGA. "The grass is always greener . . . "

Very interesting and says clearly what we all here knows, Greyhawk is very popular.

Can see that all my research put Sweden in a healthy 8th place Laughing

No real surprises there, considering the support through novels the top two have. FR and DL just have better name recognition at this point.

Take those search results with a grain of salt. Comparison of interest levels through Googling is going to be skewed. There is nothing available for Greyhawk so people are more likely to search on-line for Greyhawk information, whereas Ebberon stuff is known to be available at any number of on-line locations or the nearest FLGS, bookstore, etc.

Even still, its kind of amusing.

Wow! Who would have thought that Calgary (my hometown) would make the top 10, and that it would have so few Eberron Googlers???!!! I'm kind of proud, actually... Happy

TwiceBorn... you've gotta stop using http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=greyhawk&btnG=Google+Search&meta= as your homepage. You're skewing the results! ;-)
As for your campaign of extermination against the Eberrites... well... ;-)

    Not guilty! Smile

I took another look at the graph. Equally interesting is the fact that regardless of campaign setting, there has been a steady decrease in Google searches from 2004 to 2006... why? Are fewer people playing D&D? Or have they found better resources off the net (or simply switched search engines)? I know there is no way of obtaining definite answers to these questions, and the graph itself is not without its interpretive problems (as other posters have indicated), but I can't help but think about such things...

I was trying to figure out why there was such a spike in interest in FR during late 2004. I was wondering if it was due to the pulication of The Two Swords in October of that year. Any other guesses?

Im guessing that the intro of eberron fragmented some of the FR and greyhawk players.

As my Web Fu is very strong, I poked around a bit. In November, Salvatore's book "The Two Swords" came out (his only 2004 novel). Ho hum. Probably the real reason for the spike... Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone for the XBox came out in mid November.
