    Defunct currency of Greyhawk?

What are (or WERE) the values of a Brass Bit, Bronze Zee, and Iron Drab when they were in use? What could you buy with these?

They were mentioned in the Gord books but never used in the game as far as I am aware.

Back when I was running a campaign I worked out a conversion system... I'll dig through my notes in the basement and see if I can find something.

    Arnok:
There are a few kingdoms in the Flanaess that still use that coinage according to the Greyhawk Gazetteer. I'm not certain at the moment which ones, but a quick check on the currency within the stats will reveal it fast enough. If your still wondering in by Mon-Tues. I could look for you if you haven't gotten around to it.

Brass Bit = 3.5 cents. For a single bit, you could by 4 pieces of lint, 3 chicken feathers, or one pea.
Bronze Zee = 7.2 pesos. A zee will get you half a chunk of driftwood, 2 spoonfuls of toejam, or 3 burnt-out AAA batteries.
Iron Drab = 1.74 rupees. A drab will get you a broken wooden spoon, 5 feet of used dental floss, or one ounce of cat vomit.

One of the Gord coins (bronze pieces?) also appears on WG4 Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun.

I cobbled together this conversion chart a while back, which was based on another which many have seen.

I did make a point correcting the value given to the golden dokshee. On the chart I based this one off of, the golden dokshee was incorrectly listed as just being what the gold orb is called in the West, when in fact a golden dokshee is half the size and value of a gold orb(as per the Gord books).

I've never really understood Gary's reasons for the radical departure from the AD&D® coinage system. I mean, 10/11, anyone???

He could have based it more on real world gold vs. platinum values.

At the time, perhaps--but current gold & platinum values stand at $919.80 and & $1,634.50 per ounce (USD), respectively.

I can't remember exactly where, but I seem to remember EGG said in an interview that he used that coinage system because it is more realistic in a real-world sense and because certain books he was reading at the time used similar systems as well.

Looking back at that time period, I also discovered there were a couple of Dragon articles floating around that discussed alternate coinages. For those of you who were gaming back then, you may remember the "silver standard" discussions that were popular at the time. It seems even the world of D&D has its fashion fads that come and go...

There are these prop coins if you have some extra real money to throw around buying fake money. :D

Kind of pricey, but they do look cool. I held a box of them last week and they do have a good weight to them. I assume the different colored finishes are electroplated and will wear off just a bit on the edges/high points over time. Nice game props though.
