I think Fraz-Urb'luu just had a little gas. Well, little by demon prince standards.

Just for fun, I did a calculation of the potential damage. It came to a whopping 71448 points of damage -- assuming all the damage was d6.

Wow! I think I saw a Barbarian-Frenzied Berserker in 3.5E do that much damage once. Wink At least with this explosion someone with Evasion could dodge it. That kind of damage is enough to kill your next 700 characters! Yeash.

That illo was by Easley IIRC. And yeah I don't think he has a

    Late to the Reading

    Hi all -
Being a long issue and one that revolved around a talking dog, I wasn't interested. That is until I saw Serlotin.
My guess as to who Serlotin is drawn to look like - well, I'm not sure about the whole AD&D 2e PHB, because there is another guy that comes well before that. Lets call him...Ringlerun ( http://www.toyarchive.com/Dungeons&Dragons/Figures/ActionFigures.html ) the Good Wizard.

EDIT:(Here is a picture of Ringlerun as a 2.5" miniature - with a longer beard that is more in keeping with the drawing of Serlotin - http://www.toyarchive.com/Dungeons&Dragons/Minitures/MiniFigures.html )

This was 1982-1984. I remember having a few of these - and for good measure when I had a job and could afford to "re-collect" I bought some of them. I have a few of these that are listed on that page - as well as never hearing of many of the (like Bowmerc).
Thus, I have to say that maybe even Mort was wrong. Damn, and Rasgon isn't around to see me actually post a really good and maybe even a worthy post.

Ringlerun! Yup that is him alright, can't deny it. I think Ringlerun Slerotin
was his full name. Or was it Slerotin Ringlerun? ;)

    Now looking at those
mini figs. I had Strongheart, Warduke and Kellek. If only I had got the Good
    Wizard I would've known!

Melf! Prince Melf Brightflame is an action figure! LOL.

His shield must be from the hippogriff riders who serve the Queen.

It seems likely that that was Gary Gygax's original intention (or it could be a griffin), but according to The Shady Dragon Inn, it comes from the "hunting hawk symbol of his clan."

    WoG is for Gods

    Mort -
After re-reading and going over the whole Serlotin comic, I'm actually dismayed. Serlotin Ringlerun isn't a god. Yes, in the OJ there have been a few heroes, and you have the id10t twins (wouldn't call them anything but wonder_ful to their faces, however) show up all the time, but WoG is about the GODS. The Gods of the WoG 1.0. Rationalization here: The id10t twins are "representatives' of a god (so they count).
So unless you're making another comic strip dedicated to the heroes of WoG1.0, then lets keep WoG about the Gods of WoG 1.0 and 2.0 (for those are some funny scenes, and I've told you I have a story about 1.0 to 2.0 and I'm PMing it to you now).
    Be Well. Be Well Represented.

I've been pushing the boundaries of my gods only premise for a long time. Even longer than the cultists though they are the best. Anyhow, Slerotin is presently dead so he is now in the afterlife and is thus immortal. Tada!

    Oh yes, speaking of WoG2.0....

At first blush, drunken LARPing with three hawties sounds really good, but on second thaught:

    1.“Your sword is too small.”
    2.“Get off the floor.
3.“You look like you have just been violated by a family of ogres.”

Its enough to make you drop your mead goggles.

Graz'zt should have ripped out the lungs of jay leno several seasons back. Wink

As for the content, glad I am not going to play the latest edition. Tell me where the hatred for the GH deities we know and love comes from...anyone....and the name raven queen...ugh. At least Nerull sounds mysterious and threatening . So many holes in the exerpt it boogles the mind. I leave it to another to spend the time to list them because I am too nauseated. Sad

I'm with ya Crag, except I find it humorous rather than stomach churning. We can only hope that if GH 4E adopts the same approach they at least let us replace Nerull with homegrown Wee Jas.

On a side note I find the whole 'creation' of the Raven Queen boggling. They obviously kept several GH Core gods including Vecna of all things, but then demoted a bunch of the actual playable GH deities, one of which was Wee Jas. WJ had her own write up in Dragon for goodness sake. My only guess as to why they let WJ go is she became too overblown in portfolio and they opted for a (note) simpler female death goddess. That is fine I guess, but in the process they now have a Goddess of Death and...Fate? Ut oh, watch yer back Istus!

Thats too bad really, 4e is a great system for GH campaigns.

She is called the raven queen because the raven is her representative animal. Her name is hidden so that orcus can not use its power to over throw her. she is a conglomeration of Wee Jas and the irish goddess Morrigan

Morrigan, sometimes known as Morrigu, was an Irish goddess of death on the battlefield who helped the Tuatha De Danann at both battles of Magh Tuireadh. She was associated with the other war deities Macha, Badb and Nemain. Morrigan appeared sometimes as a warrior in a battle, siding with her favourites. Most often she soared overhead as a raven or a crow, shrieking and flapping her wings to scare the host, or to signify imminent death.

She settled on the shoulder of the Ulster hero Cuchulainn when he was finally killed in the war against Queen Medb's forces. Cuchulainn had not only refused Morrigan's love, but in anger had even wounded her. For such a deed his fate was sealed.

Hell hath no fury like a war goddess scorned! I think Morrigan is a fascinating figure in Celtic mythology.

The raven queen is a much better thought out and implemented diety and has a much greater appeal for use in any campaign. IMO[/img][/b]

Thanks for the spot check cennedi! Now that you mention it she does make a good warhammer dark elf, except I didn't pick up on any elf ears that might've helped. Huh. I guess that means this'll never be the RQ's canon image, ah well. This worked for a one-shot I guess.

As for the morrigan-wee jas combo, that I like.

I am baffled is all Confused

A knock on GH is the number of deities; which is justified as oerth became the test for ideas. However the deities chosen for culling seem to be the "iconic" ones to be replaced with "WoW" versions.

We have no animosity toward GH but rather then cull the fringe deities we will kill the core iconic ones. Perhaps it is me but a subconscious sense of pettiness seems to be at work.

Yeah Crag, I dunno. There does seem to be a sense that the policy with Wizard's current staff is to reimagine -everything- as its easier to do than adapting material that has the weight of decades behind it. It isn't just them though, it's all the rage in TV, Hollywood, comics....any place where fantasy meets a younger generation of writers and consumers. Ah well...

    Crag,

As we don't have a 4e GH we have no idea what is going to be in the deities list and what isn't. To look to Core for answers isn't really realistic. The core gods are just that, core. Bane in 4e FR is not the same as the Core version. Also, the FR god list is way larger than Core but smaller than previous FR lists.

Also, remember the current model for campaign worlds is 3 books: Campaign Setting, Player's Guide, & Module. That model enforces the need to consolidate and distill things to their essence. There is just no way to condense 30 years of published GH material into that small a page count.

So, in essence its not pettiness, but necessity of the form that will drive the reduction in gods. I think this will be a good thing for GH in the end because it will open the campaign up again.

    My two coppers,

Just so I'm, sure rossik. Have you seen my Needfest Special from 2007?

    http://www.greyhawkonline.com/wogcomic/needfest3/needf1.htm

It has Robilar, Quij and Riggby to boot, plus it is the only appearance of Iuz in my comic. Now what you probably meant is a regular Robilar storyline like with the cultists? Not a bad request if so. Wink

No. Not consciously, at least. But I kept staring at it thinking there was something about it. I bet that was the way you drew it, though, rather than some latent insight on my part. Razz

I was always sure that Easley wizard was meant to be the Ringlerun action figure - http://www.toyarchive.com/Dungeons&Dragons/Figures/Ringlerun.html

Other than that, great to see you're still keeping up the good work!

Thanks Scott! I must be the only person who didn't remember Ringlerun. :P

And btw, your Castle Greyhawk fiction has inspired me to do some GH fiction writing. Have you been writing anything else lately?

    Aww...

    Hi all,

    >And btw, your Castle Greyhawk fiction has inspired me to do some GH fiction writing. Have you been writing anything else lately?<

As I shared on Greytalk recently, I have been too busy developing my own retro-clone supehero game (Hideouts & Hoodlums), writing for Mythmere Games, and writing superhero fanfiction to do any Greyhawk writing anymore. I am glad I inspired you and hope your Greyhawk fiction turns up on Greytalk someday!

    That's amazing!

Wow...I thought for sure you must have been fudging some of those terms as I read it, but it looks like you just really did your homework! Funny too; it reminds me of how my ex-wife must have felt when she was in a room with three Greytalkers discussing Greyhawk...

OK, so it is Rudd, Olidammara and Norebo opening the chest, but who is on the guard of the sword? It looks like Delleb?

Kirt, the answer to the guard of the sword or better, the name of the sword, is one of the easter eggs I threw into that pic. Anyone know where its from?

To the sword's right among the coins there's what to me looks like... an eye? Vecna's Eye!? Maybe I'm seeing things and it's just a ring...

Vecna's Eye and the Sword of Kas? Confused

That's my thinking, though I had missed the eye! Embarassed Evil

But the sword immediately put me in mind of Kas. Cool

LOL. Yeah guys the thing in the pile is the Eye of Vecna and the Sword is the Sword of Kas (check your Vecna Lives! for a good look at the crossguard detail). Kudos.

bubba: Good entry! Just how a group of roguish adventurers would act when confronted with 2 or more possible relics. Laughing

Enough speculating on the picture now, you found all the hidden stuff. Any other entries?

    I prefer Reaper Mini's

    Hi all -
I'm not saying that I can do a better job. However, When I first saw these I thought they had too much play-doo (green stuff).
I think your base miniature wasn't quite right. I for one don't really prefer Warhammer or other mini's other than Reaper (well, I do like WotC's plastic's for monsters).
For my Pholtan Inquisitors I've used Reaper's Legends line and I've linked to a few of their base options that I think might work better for a base miniature.
We just moved, and as we're now "empty nesters" I get my own room. All my books are on book cases (vs being in a box never to be looked at and revered) and I have my painting desk. Heck, just last night I hung up my miniature cases on the wall and I'm putting my "whites" up so that I can now begin the cleaning process (have years of being in boxes, I'll have to re-paint them white). So maybe, but unlikely, I'll take one of these Reaper Inquisitors and make one a cultist.
But here are those reaper base ideas - you'll use less green stuff.

This mini is the one that I originally was thinking of - this cultist has his arms raised and is holding the Codex of Infinite Planes!:
    http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/inquisitor/latest/02337

This cultist has a sword, for which he chaotically smites his dark lords enemies, and he also carries the CoIP on his belt.:
    http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Dark%20Heaven%20Legends/latest/02412

This potential cultist has a wavy dagger and a crooked staff:
    http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/inquisitor/latest/02324

I don't think this cultist is quite right. But then I used this miniature for Tarburn, the Mini's Handbook Warmage - and just like his name, he used a lot of fire based spells and as an NPC he ended up dying by fire.
    http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/inquisitor/latest/02720

Now, this cultist is a blue orchid assassin. Something about him looks right, but not quite the cultist feel that the inquisitors have:
    http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Dark%20Heaven%20Legends/latest/02914

The final cultist contestant from the reaper miniature line comes as a pair, just like the hand drawn versions. These cultists already have a female sacrafice, which could currently be painted as a drow. Cultist on the left his reading from his dark book, preparing to use the CoIP to usurp the Spider Queen's power for their own dark lord, while the other has in his hands the ceremonial dagger, and in looking at the back of the mini's he also has in his back "pocket" a scroll.
On the down side - their faces are showing. But with a little green stuff, I think a full pillow case can be made fairly easily. These guys also appear to be a little more muscular, whereas those in the comic are almost rail thin (and my first choice is the first mini I listed and he's rail thin - are are the rest of those inquisitors).
(EDIT: I forgot to link the cultists)
    http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Dark%20Heaven%20Legends/latest/03312#detail/03312_w_1

In typing this out - this potential cultist - it makes me think of a dating game....trying out for the team.

This is a link to a search of their inquisitor mini's:
    http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/inquisitor

So while I didn't really like the mini's - I do applaud your fine work and likely much better than I would have done. I think that if you do attempt to re-do them, you'll have a much easier time with mini's that you don't have to remove so much iridium/metal.

Keep up the good work Mort, and as always, your site is truly the only reason I keep GHO alive.
    Be Well. Be Well Molded.

Mystic-Scholar and Wolfsire: Thanks! The things I do for a laugh.

Good links Theocrat. Yeah working with metal is a pain. I have a few Reaper minis and they're always so extravagent I wouldn't mar them with a knife. GW minis though I've abused for a long time so I don't feel bad if I make mistakes. I like the poses that Reaper uses, best out there for characters IMO. I hope to see some more work on your minis, its an area of Greyhawk fandom that we don't explore hardly at all around here. :)

Anytime I do Pholtan stuff it has to pass muster with the Theocrat of Pholtus. I wonder what he would think of such a Revelation Heresy?

btw would be task-masters, I did enough material for half a year's worth of comics. I deserve a break don't I? Also...get to posting captions dammit!

Thank you for the praise O'Scholar. Unfortunately I will press on. Taking any lengthy rest might result in my complacency and possibly the end of the comic. I have at least 64 more weeks to hit 300 my next milestone so expect alot more cultists and gods in space. Happy

Ah, Mortellan, Servant of Obad-hai, the "neutrality" is not lost upon me! Laughing

I enjoyed the first five Darksun novels -- and Brom did do excellent work, I remember those covers (or was it just the chicks? Evil Grin ) -- but I wouldn't want to "play" in that setting. Neutral

Your work is as outstanding as always, of course. From everyone here, thanks for "pressing on." Happy

    Do More Gong!

"I'll give you black sensations up and down your spine.
If you're into evil, you're a friend of mine.
See my white light flashing as I split the night,
'Cause if good's on the left, then I'm stickin' to the right!"

    Evil Grin

Mort, how do you think these things up? Yet another fine "moral" given due consideration. Nice job. Cool

This one was compliments of the "Theocrat" of Pholtus (and?) Iomedae.

    Theocrat of Iomedae

    Hi all -
I'd been planning this comic idea for a long time. I first gave Mort the idea back in November last year. Then I took even longer and came up with more ideas and wrote down a ton of 'research' for this little concept and finally sometime around March I gave that to Mort. I'd been waiting a long time for this one to come up, been looking forward to Mort's take on the idea. Pretty close to what I originally stated, right down the the schism, which I love.
As usual, I love Mort's work and I just love this story. Finally, Pholtus begins his accession and planned take over of WoG 2.0!

Doubly delicious is that I actually celebrate my anniversary of playing D&D on the 18th of September each year. I don't actually remember the actual date that I started playing, but I do know that it was the first couple weeks of school - I was in the third grade at Lilian J. Rice School living at 410 Village Drive in Chula Vista, CA. It was September of of 1979. So today I celebrate my 30 years of playing D&D (in some fashion or another [like Pathfinder]) and having a comic done that I helped author is just full of AWESOME.

    Be Well. Be Well WoG'd.

Congrats on the anniversary Issak. One more day and it would've fell on Talk Like a Pirate Day though. That would've been awesomer! I have 27 years of gaming under my belt I think. The only reason I say that is because IIRC the OD&D boxed sets used to say Ages 10 & up and I remember using that as a reason for my mom to buy it for me, but then again I was probably introduced to it a year ahead by my friend so...28 perhaps.

Sorry I took so long to get to that idea. The Golarion storyline has been a tricky one to begin with since I only half-pay attention to Paizo stuff now and their progression of adventures and books has been fast to say the least. I think adding Pholtus to the mix will drum up some good drama at the game table now.

    More next time!
