    Dark ranger

    Dear all:

I am working on an idea for my home campaign set in Salt Marsh of a Dark Ranger who bears Blackrazor, for those of you who know that venerable adventure.

Yes, I know, not quite canon, but you can't not play White Plume Mountain, for Gygax's sake.

Any thoughts of some easy to use material for such a frenzying / berserking ranger? Thanks ahead of time for the help.

You can enjoy some of our campaign materials here:

    Hope you enjoy.

I saw on your wikispaces you are using some conglomeration of 1E and 3E rules. I won't comment on that, but if you're interested, in Unearthed Arcana for 3.5 there is the rage variant you might like called Whirling Frenzy. A combination ranger/barbarian might work out well for this. There is another cool version listed as well. This variant opens up another option, a variant for Wild Shape called Aspects of Nature.

Hope all of this helps you out.

Addditional ideas about this character are that he wanders the Dreadwood killing enemies of the elves and Keoland to keep his hunger sated.

You might consider making him a nice paragon of goodness. A protector of the innocent and the natural order of the Marshland...

But then he found Blackrazor and before he knew what he was dealing with it has subtly corrupted him. He is, in his mind, still a paragon of good and the protector of the people and lands of Salt Marsh but Blackrazor is keeping him from realizing that slaughtering a farmer to prevent him from draining some marshland to develop more farmland is a greater evil in and of itself. Blackrazor deludes him into thinking he's just being firm... harsh even... but fair and just.

I'd build him as a Ranger/Blackguard and, depending on how powerful your player's characters are, have the corruption process far enough along that its starting to turn him into a Deathknight. In fact, if he is a long running NPC in the campaign that development could be something to keep him just powerful enough keep the players worried.

Plus it might present them with an additional ethical problem... The ranger, by himself was and may still be a good man, its the sword that's the problem. Can or should the characters save him from the sword?
