    Essential 2E Greyhawk products.

I was just trying to put together a list of *essential* 2E Greyhawk products for me to track down. You see, back when I was a silly teenager, I refused to buy *any* 2E Greyhawk products because a) I was upset EGG left TSR and thought no one else could fill his shoes; and b) I was greatly insulted by such products as WG7 and WG8 which were released at the tail-end of 1E.

Anyway, I'm more mature now and I realise that I probably should have bought some 2E GH products (because I hear such great things about Carl Sargent's work).

So, I was wondering if anyone could provide me with a list of *essential* 2E GH products that are a "must have" for any GH fan.

At the same time, I'm hoping folks could also supplement this list with another list showing me the 2E GH products to avoid like the plague! Coz I've heard there are some real stinkers.

    Thank You.

Essential? Must have? Surely such words have no meaning from one person to the next Wink

My own 'must have' 2E list:

City of Greyhawk Boxed Set 1989: maps of the outlying areas and city proper, city key, adventures galore (Sargent)

Veca Lives! adventure 1990: a very interesting adventure (Cook)

From the Ashes Boxed Set 1992: 'updates' the Flanaess to 585 CY; as you (most likely) know none of the new history was written/conceived by EGG. Just in case that matters. (Sargent)

WG3, WG4, WG5 (1992, 1993): Gazetteer-style details of Rary's new kingdom in the Bright Lands, Furyondy/Highfolk/Nyrond, and Iuz's Lands, respectively. (Pryor, Sargent, Sargent)

The Adventure Begins (1998): More or less YAG (yet another gazetteer), with the timeline updated to 591 CY (Moore)

The Scarlet Brotherhood (1999 (?)): History of the SB, and details on the Tilvanot Peninsula, Hepmonaland and the Amedio, including maps. (the author(s) elude(s) me at the moment)

There were more 2E publications, I'm sure they're on other people's 'must-have' lists. I won't be advising you on any products 'to avoid', personally I think any product, no matter how 'stinky', has a lot to offer the creative and the wise.

    Thanks.

What about the WGS, WGM, etc. modules.

    Are they any good?

That's a good question, and for someone other than me. I have access to those adventures, but haven't read of them in detail other than plot summaries in other products.

If you like to read novels definitely get the Gord novels by Gygax.
    Gord novels descriptions:
    http://www.tc.umn.edu/~monax002/Council/resources/novels/novels.html
    http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/~dyck/GHBooks.txt

As for gaming material the list by ecla sounds good to me (Though I believe he means WGR 3,4,5 instead of WG !) I'd add the unpublished WGR 7 Ivid the Undying to that list.[For where to download WGR 7 see below] Those with WGR6 and the From the Ashes Box are the complete Sargent-era GH works. (Monster Myth is also from that time and by Sargent, and although not GH but general, it might be useful. Also The Night Below campaign box and the later return to the Tomb of Horrors are GH in all but name)

Another essential might be the Greyhawk Adventures HC.(or is that one considere 1E?)

There might be more stuff, depending on how deep you want get into it.

You can safely disregard WGM1, WGQ1,WG 9-11. (mostly agreed upon by the GH community)
    I personally find WGR2 and WGA1-3 interesting.
Of the later works Return of the Eight is quite good.

Google-search for some review on the net and check the product listings below and decide for yourself.
    Some reviews are available here:
    http://www.tc.umn.edu/~monax002/Council/ (scroll down, click reviews)

For a listing of what products are Greyhawk products see these lists:
http://ulmo.mux.net/greyhawk/ (old material, some advice on what's essential)
    http://www.cmc.net/~rtaylor/greyhawk/product_chron.html (all related)

If you're interested in this type of info check out http://www.cmc.net/~rtaylor/greyhawk/modules.html
for some info on which modules are supposed to be completed how.

Most of the old stuff should be available on ebay quite cheap, though there are some collector pieces which fetch quite high prices.

For general descriptions check out the TSR Archive:
    http://home.flash.net/~brenfrow/gh/gh.htm
    http://home.flash.net/~brenfrow/

Much stuff is also available as pdf-downloads:
    http://www.svgames.com/downloads-wotc.html

There's also some free stuff available.
First and foremost WGR 7 Ivid the Undying(Sargent)
If you don't already have it get it now!!!
    Download it from WoTC: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads
or as free pdf available from the Acaeum site's Library: http://www.acaeum.com/Library/IvidUndying.pdf

For some very obscure clues to a possible cause of Rary's (and Robilar's) change to evil read the adventure A House on Summoner Court by Roger Moore available online on the rpgarchive.com or as a pdf file download in the Oerth journal.
[The adventure was also published in Shadis magazine #50 with some additional info and optional details on the artifact/relic dagger]

Other GH modules available for free from WotC:
    Ex1, Ex2: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/dx20020121x8
L1 Secret of Bone Hill: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads

...more 1E modules download links (scroll down): http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_links.html

Also I found this on the net: http://members.fortunecity.com/noldrek/modules/index.html
(scourge of the slave lords, queen of demonwebpits, expedition to barrier
    peaks)

Oh and for the newest update (3e) get the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer (If you're lucky for less than $10 on ebay). It's the only 3E GH (aside from LGHJ) product and is well worth the price at more than 190 pages. Here's a link to a detailed review:
    http://66.34.111.89/eric/3eoldnews15.htm (scroll down)

The first five living Greyhawk Journals were also great.

    Wow! Thanks.

    What's wrong with:

    WGM1, WGQ1,WG 9-11

    I don't own them so I don't know.

    I know WG7 and WG8 are disliked.

I also know Gargoyle (WG9?) is disliked (I don't know why though; I've never read it).

My pleasure. I had a rough draft of this material lying around for a while.
(Am working on a getting into GH article)

As for why those above are not good/recommended, they're either very light on GH material or really really bad, or both.

Check out some reviews here on canonfire :
    http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=Reviews
There's one for WG9 WGQ1, FtA, GHAdv, maybe more...

Also there are some reviews on the old Council of Greyhawk site:

I like Slavers a lot too. I'd pick that up.
