    Canonfire! and The Crier!

Hail and well met, fellow Greyhawkers! Happy

As you have undoubtedly noticed, The Crier is now up on the Front Page. And the Front Page, itself, has a new look. Let me first say that . . . more is on the way!

The Crier that you see on the Front Page will soon have a hyperlink that will allow you to go directly to the actual blog site. We are discussing having this link in the bottom right hand corner and have it say simply: “read more . . .” Click on it and you're "off and running!" This hasn't been “set in stone” yet, but it's what we're planning.

Also, the “block" containing The Crier -- and those containing the Posted Articles -- will soon be in the form of scrolls. Yes, both The Crier and the Posted Articles will look like scrolls. Canonfire! is getting a new look.

You will also notice that you now have “Messages” at the top of the page where you would log out. The “0” will be replaced by the number of messages you have waiting for you, of course. However . . .

From now on, whenever you have messages waiting for you, a “box” will appear over the Front Page, near the upper left hand corner, alerting you to these messages. In this box will appear the name of the person who sent it, the date it was sent and it's subject. There is an “X” on the box that allows you to close it, but from now on, there will be no more “missing” messages because you didn't “see” that you had one. In fact, testing it on my computer I can tell you -- unless you close the box, you won't be able to click on the Forums link! Bet that gets your attention! Laughing

Tell me that's not pretty cool, eh? And there is more on the way! Now, back to The Crier!

The message you see there now is our “opening” welcome message. This will be left up for a few more days, probably until we get the link established. After-wards, every time a new Post is made to The Crier, that is what will appear on the Front Page of Canonfire!

Yes! Every time something new is posted to The Crier, our community will be the very first to know. It will appear at the top of Canonfire's Front Page. You can click on the link and . . . go! And trust me, that information you see on the Front Page is going to change just as often as we can make it change, because The Crier is going to be a “living” blog. We, the Staff, are going to “visit” the blog and post to it just as often as we can, with all the latest that you want and are asking for. And that's a promise.

One more thing you should know: We've widened Canonfire's look. Our site used to be 998 pixels in width, it's now 1200 pixels in width. Some of you have had problems with this. Here's how to fix it.

Go to your "Account." Once there, you will see little boxes stretched across the top of your page. One of these says "Themes." Click on it. You will be offered an option of "narrowing" your view of Canonfire. That's right, no one else's computer will be affected -- just yours.

So if you find yourself needing to scroll sideways to see the "new" Canonfire, there's your fix!

So, we're glad to have you as a part of the community and we hope that each and everyone of you take an active role in the changes coming our way. And an active role can be nothing more than simply commenting, so don't think anyone's asking you to write Articles of any kind. All we ask is that you “talk” to us.

We're certainly excited and we hope that you are too. Our community continues to grow and Greyhawk continues to Live . . . in spite of what anyone else says. Wink

What's up with the white pop-up menus that keep appearing, listing thread subjects? They're pretty annoying.

Rasgon, I really haven't seen that on my screen, so I can't say.

I'm "working" with Gary on Greytalk right now. He thinks that you must have a lot of unread Messages. If you'll recall my explanation above, that's how "Private Messages" now appear when you log on.

So please check your Private Messages and see if that might not be the "problem" you think you have.

Thanks and let me know if that isn't it. Cool

Oh, I see. Well, they weren't unread, but I hadn't been methodically deleting them after I read them either, so it was still nagging me about their existence. That was pretty annoying! Oh well, they're all deleted now, so I guess the problem is solved.

Canonfire is really looking good, gentlemen! I'm impressed with the improvements so far and thank you for addressing the issues we've had with some of those changes so quickly.

I'm looking forward to the Crier and more changes to come. Keep up the good work and thanks for devoting your time to Canonfire! Smile

I'm also getting the white pop-up box and I don't want to delete my messages. The pop-up says I have "unread" messages even though I've read them all. I even tried clicking on all of my messages again today to "read" them, but it didn't deactivate the notification. It seems like the system should be able to differentiate between read and unread messages in my box. Are you sure everything is set up correctly?

Also the Themes page doesn't load so I can't adjust my resolution.

Finally, my scroll bar/mouse wheel doesn't work on the site anymore.

I'm using Windows XP and Firefox.

You can 'save' the messages, thereby getting them out of your inbox without deleting them.

But really... I hate the message pop-up box. I liked having an excuse for not checking my messages. Being nagged about it is not fun.

Vestcoat, you will receive the pop-up notice anytime that there are messages in your "IN" box. So "SAVE" your messages, thus getting them out of your "IN" box and you won't keep getting the pop-up notice. But know that as long as you choose to leave the messages in your "IN" box, you're going to get the pop-up message.

The "Theme" link has worked for everyone else, so it's not a problem with the site. I can't tell you what might be wrong at your end.

I used to use Windows XP, now I use Windows 7 -- but only because it came with my new laptop. And I use Firefox. The only problem I've ever had is with IE -- it won't let me "comment" on Posted Articles, so I use Firefox instead.

So far, the "Theme" box has helped quite a few people, so again, the problem must be at your end. If it was "here," it wouldn't work for anybody. Sorry your having problems, but it's not possible for me to know what they are from "here."

You need to see what may be wrong at your end. Sorry I can't be of more help than that, but I'll point a couple of "computer" people your way and maybe they can help.

The other thing to consider is this: When you click on "Theme" all you get is a little box with an arrow. Click on the arrow and it offers you "Canonfire," which is the view you see, or "CFnarrow," which is the "view" that narrows the page down. It does not offer a multitude of settings.

    Sorry you're having trouble.

I just posted a fix. You should only have to read the message in order to count it as read, not remove it from the inbox as well.

Yay! The message tag on the top of the page, which shows how many messages one has anyways, seems enough to me. And, why am I saving 23 messages again? Just gotta let some of them go methinks. Laughing

One other bit: the "Search The Forums" option should be present not just on the main forum index page, but also on every single sub-forum page as well. We don't want people needing to search for the search function after all. Wink Also, the site search at the top right should be more descriptive as to what it does. That search function does not include the forums in its search, but instead includes most every other aspect of the site(Articles, Downloads, etc.). Not many people are aware of the differences in the two search functions.

And "you" were wondering if he ever "read" these things. Tsk. Sad

Probably the same reason that I am saving 49 of them.

It looks great guys. I'm glad that the mail pop-up box is resolved. I got it several times as well.

The front page is definitely a nice organization ... and I like the account stuff out of the way up at the top. It's much more readable. Just a different dynamic, sort of. Also ... I like the forums with the less busy non parchment background; it feels a bit more open.

    News Alert!

The "title" of the "new" post of The Crier, displayed on CF, now acts as a hyperlink to take you directly to The Crier's home page.

    Enjoy! Happy

You should set that link to open up a new browser tab, rather than navigate people away from Canonfire!. Wink
