    Paladin of Hextor

When arguing on WoTC forum about Paladin class in D&D Next I got rather interesting idea for NPC - he would be now Paladin of Hextor, once serving Heironeous. I'm intersting what circumstances could push rightous knight to be tyranny incarnated? And what could be his main mission from his dark patron?

See Death Knights of Oerth in the Living Greyhawk Journal, December 2001 for the background on Kurgoth and his band of Knight Protectors that went from Paladinhood to Death Knight status in the service of Demogorgon. There is a part II to that article also, if you can find it.

Paladins can fall into evil because of betrayal (a loved one, a companion, a patron god or liege, etc.), greed (for wealth or power), lust (betraying a trust given to them), disillusionment (loss of faith in their god/liege's goodness or ability to do right), or even magical compulsion. I'm sure there are many other reasons, but these should give you some ideas.

Dungeon #104 had an article on variant paladins of Greyhawk, including paladins of Hextor.

As far as circumstances, the feeling that he was betrayed by his god or his fellow Heironeans would probably be a good motivator. Even if he, as a paladin should know it was the right action to take, say that his beloved sister, possessed by a demon or turned into a vampire was killed by fellow Heironean paladins or clerics. Something like that.

    Holy Warriors of Greyhawk

    Here is another example:

An older reference is the "Holy Warriors of Greyhawk" article. I found it on the old Codex of Greyhawk website. The site itself is defunct but can be accessed via the wayback machine. Here's a link to the aforementioned article:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20020604103528/http://216.10.17.109/

This article details several fighter varients that also have certain priestly skills. Not to the full extent that paladins enjoy, but these varients allow for extra character and flavor. The Champions of the Red Arrow are the Hextorian (un)holy warrior class. I enjoyed these varients as 1st - 2nd edition kits and found that they were fairly well balanced.
