    Deadly Puddings

Reading the special defenses of deadly puddings (especially the black variety) and wondering if I am correct in the following assessment:

They are virtually immune to physical attack. Weapons do not hurt them whatsoever, only cleaving and cutting them into smaller blobs of protoplasm that will gladly dissolve you. Blunt weapons likely do nothing as well. Acid, cold, and lightning does not affect them, either.

Seemingly only fire and some specific spells (it mentions that Magic Missiles will, so the closely related Lance of Disruption should as well) hurt them.

    Is this so?

In 3.x and later, Magic Missile and similar effects are classified as 'force' effects. I think of force effects as a typical sci-fi 'force-field'. Mordenkainen's Sword, Spiritual Hammer, Force Cage, Wall of Force, and items like a Ring of the Ram all create a 'force' effect. I suggest you adopt this type of system when considering what will hurt a black pudding. If the Lance of Disruption creates a 'force' effect of any kind (a shimmering lance of light out of thin air or even a burst of power from a material lance), then it should probably damage the pudding like Magic Missile does.

Some of them aren't even that little! Shocked

Yeah, and I thought that shambling mounds were nearly impervious. Well, after reading about puddings, I'll have to toss them into that category, too.

I know they dissolve metals as if they were nothing, but thinking I may be merciful and allow a saving throw (vs. acid) each round the pudding is in contact with armor to determine effect.

SX, I agree with your statements. Odd that Force magicks damage them when blunt force weapons don't though...

On the up-side, puddings are stupid, and usually not very fast. Point being, you can distract them at the very least with something they might like to "eat", and then, simply, run away (anyone stupid enough not to do this really does deserve to be dissolved into goo Razz). Then you come back properly prepared and take them down with magic missile, burning hands, *flaming sphere* (extremely useful in this case), produce flame, fireball, and flaming oil. And other fire spells of course, but I figured I would just mention the more readily available, lower level spells. Anyone capable of casting wall of flame, flame strike, summon a fire elemental, or something else suitably powerful ought not to be challenged much by a deadly pudding.

The spell Protection from Amorphs, comes in quite handy when dealing with Puddings and other similar monsters.
