How much fire and acid (damage) does it take...? (trolls!)

...to prevent the regenerative powers of a troll (or any other beast with this ability, for that matter) from restoring it back to 'life?'

The rules (guidelines, as Mystic would remind us) don't really say, only that acid and fire are needed.

Thinking that the damage from fire or acid would have to match, or exceed, the total hit points of the troll (or other beastie) in order to totally destroy any chance of regeneration. Just sprinkling a bit of oil and then touching the body a few times with a torch likely won't do it. You'd have to truly immolate the creature.

I generally agree with you. The damage inflicted by fire or acid would have to equal or be greater than the total hit points of the troll to kill it.

Monstrous Manual makes a point of saying it is permanent damage. That could lead one to believe the lost hit points are never healed for the troll once fire or acid damage is received.

Often my characters will put a troll down with blades and then dump some oil on it and light it on fire. They figure they have killed it. Often times they have not but the group adventures on never to see the troll again so they are none the wiser.

When they take the time to tend the fire and burn the thing to ash, they know they have it completely defeated.

I am toying with the idea that if any bit of the troll remains, it will re-grow even if the total hit points are exceeded by fire/acid damage.

    As an example:

Right now, the adventure group is in a battle defending Farmin (Garrotten) on Lendore Island. Three trolls are among the horde attacking town. The adventurers and town defenders have beaten back the assault. One of the trolls (female leader) went down by blade. She lost an arm in the melee. One of her subordinate male troll is just about to grab her arm and flee. I figure if he had what remains of her arm and the rest of her is lost (burned), that would be the biggest piece and has potential to eventually grow back into a troll. Figure it would add a little more troll-fear to the group. Especially if they meet the trio later.

Full hit point removal by fire/acid seems reasonable, though every combat we have had has ended with any wriggling little bit of a troll being burned to ash, so we didn't exactly count hit points. If fire/acid damage fully brings a troll to -10 hit points it is slain outright, with no need to worry if it will come back or not (because it will not). It has been rendered down and its regenerative capability defeated.

Damage caused by fire and acid cannot be regenerated, but it can be healed via normal means (or curative magic). A troll burned will heal...slowly, just like everyone else...and will likely bear the scars (emotional, too?) for the encounter.

I recall reading that severed limbs cannot regenerate a whole body (check out the Monstrous Compendium on that score), but implies that a torso or abdomen can. A troll without a head gains a new head (takes a week), but thinking that a severed head cannot regenerate a full body.

Great answers and replies. Keep them coming if anybody has anything else to add.

    much appreciation,

The largest piece will regenerate the whole body. What you can't do is grow an army of trolls by cutting off their arms and letting both the trolls regrow their arms and having the arms grow new trolls; only the trolls themselves would regenerate. In other words, if the arm or head is the largest piece left, the troll will regenerate fully.

Outside of combat, I wouldn't quantify how much fire and acid it takes to destroy a troll, within reason. Just applying lit torches to the body parts will work, but immersion in acid would be necessary (so much more than a simple throwable jar of acid) if you want to use the acid route.
