I don't recall any canonical sources describing Xvarts. Flan names referenced in a few sources suggest the language is partly inspired by Welsh Gaelic. Since the name "Xvart" is derived from "Svart", you could refer to the Welsh word for "Swarthy": "Gethin", derived from words meaning dark, swarthy, or ugly.
"One Xvart" would be "un Gethin". A group of Xvarts would then be "grwp o Gethinaid").
Xvarts are svarts from WD. Svarts as in the svart alfar from The Weirdstone of Brisingamen or the Moon of Gomrath. The article made the inspiration clear.
Calling these little dudes " drow" in Flan may cause some humorous confusion among players.
As Sir Wulf and NorkerMedic mentioned, xvarts were called svarts in their original appearance in White Dwarf Magazine, so if you're looking for an ancient/archaic form of the word xvart, that's probably your best bet.
The 4th edition Monster Manual 3 called them xivorts.
