    Recycling the old into new

In my current Greyhawk game, I was trying to come up with a new scenario for my players and idly leafing through RPG products I had. I happened to pick up Ruins of Adventure which is probably better known as the adventure that, with some alteration, became SSI's Pool of Radiance. The concept of retaking a ruined city is pretty good, especially since my game is set on the Furyondy-Iuz border circa From the Ashes.

Unfortunately, the adventure itself is pretty crap. I thought I could at least use the maps, but those weren't very good either. I thought about what other maps would be good, and I realized that Dwellers of the Forbidden City had a great 2 page spread of a ruined city with details that I could fill in to match the encounters I would create.

After jotting down some ideas, I realized that I didn't think it quite worked as a city taken by Iuz, so I moved the city into the mountains in the corner that borders Highfolk, Veluna, and Furyondy. Since in my game, Prince Thrommel was no longer lost, the unification of Veluna and Furyondy was still on, and this new duchy was a test case to see how well it could draw upon both nations.

I was pleased at coming up with a scenario that would last several sessions and didn't involve me drawing maps (not my strong point). Thought I would just show the process behind the curtain for my game.

Might be worth considering the Gygax' Lost City of Gaxmoor, perhaps, given your location: see https://doomsdaygames.proboards.com/post/20903/thread for its full/original GH background.

I do have Gaxmoor. When I flipped through it, its encounters weren't suitable for my group.

I am currently running The Enemy Within campaign via Roll20, and I think there are some parts that can be repurposed into a GH campaign. When that wraps up, I'll scribble down some notes for the forum. I can see why the series has the reputation that it does, but, as I keep reminding myself, it came out in its entirety before White Wolf ever published anything. So, the politicking and sleuthing have not aged particularly well.
