    Spring Postfest 2005

Canonfire! is sponsoring a spring 2005 Postfest. Greyhawkers, rev up your imaginations and start working on your submission(s). The topic this round is:

    Magic of Greyhawk

Participants are invited to write about a magical item or spell unique to the World of Greyhawk. Simply devise a magical item or spell and detail its use and lore. If you already have an unpublished spell or magic item, now is your chance to get it out in the open for all to enjoy. You may also explore the history of existing spells and enchanted objects. For example, what event prompted Nytsul to develop his expeditious fire extinguisher? Or, what dark mystery shrouds the reasons for the creation of the cord of Ekbir?

As usual, statistics are welcome for any edition of Dungeons & Dragons®, but the emphasis should be on what makes your spell interesting and unique. What it is and what it does are important. But, even more pressing, why is it here? Who crafted it, and why? Where did it come from? Was the spell created out of compulsive fear of some specific doom, or out of everyday necessity? Was the court wizard compelled by his evil king to craft a heinous scepter to exert greater malign control? Or, did the obscure priest devise a simple, yet specific, protection for his small congregation? The choice is yours.

    The Guidelines
While there are no restrictions to your imagination, there are a few rules that govern content and format.
Write about a magic item or spell of your own design.

Or, delve into the lore surrounding an existing magical spell or object.

Please keep articles to one or two pages long (600 – 1200 words).

The spell or item must have a World of Greyhawk theme.

You may submit more than one entry.

All entries must be submitted to Canonfire! by April 1, 2005.

    Submitting Your Article
    Follow these easy steps:
    1. Visit the Canonfire! Web site at www.canonfire.com.
    2. Create a site account, or if you already have one, just log in.
    3. Click the "Submit an Article" link at the top of the page, just below the banner.
    4. Submit your article. Please include the word POSTFEST in the title.
    5. E-mail any extra information, artwork, or requests to editors@canonfire.com.

    Questions
Post them here or visit the Postfest thread at Canonfire!'s World of Greyhawk Discussion forum.

At the end, we’ll choose a Postfest winner from among the submissions. But, more on that later.

    Still wondering what Postfest is?
A Postfest is a contest where fans of the World of Greyhawk write their own takes on a given Greyhawk topic. Postfests originated on the TSR/AOL mail list when the World of Greyhawk was an inactive setting. Members of the list submitted written entries to the list, and many aspects of Greyhawk saw continued development. The only thing that has changed is that Postfest has moved from a mail list to a Web based platform. The written topics are still set in Greyhawk and fans from far and wide are all invited to participate. There is no prerequisite or experience necessary – the Postfest is for everyone and anyone who is willing and able to write about the topic and submits his or her entry before the deadline. All of the entries are subsequently published and shared on the Canonfire! Web site for all to enjoy.

Hm.. Anced made a good point and I can offer a technical reason why Mortellan can participate but not win: check his title just below his name: "Postfest II & III Winner". See how tight the letters are grouped in the box, narrowingly avoiding a second line. If Mortellan wins, the admins would be hard pressed to change his title to "Postfest II, III & IV Winner". That would surely blow the order and esthetics, making a double-lined title. So, Mortellan, make Wee Jas happy and try not to win this time Laughing

    Ok

Ok, I have multiple entires (spells and items) in editing now, but they are all derived from a larger single work, which is a Gnomish Religous Book from the Kron Hills. I think it violates the 1200 word requirment. Suggestions?

I have a similar problem, one of my entries ended up being about 2k words give or take...I think I am just going to use it as a normal submission, and create some other stuff for my additional postfest entries.

    Damnit Cool

About the 1200 words, my submission also extrapolated (1600) and I apologize. But I do not mind being disqualified because it's my first postfest and I'm being on a Coubertin's state of mind about this Wink .

    The 1200 Word Limit

Hey, guys. The 1200 word limit is a guideline. We do want submissions to be as close to that limit as possible, so that they all have equal weight. It is not a strict rule that we will enforce, so submit your article in a manner that allows you to express your idea as you need to.

Thanks, you guys are doing great. Post any other questions in this thread.

    My article's in

    All right,

My submission is in now. I'm exploring again the connection between Icespire and the Coldwood that I first described at the last postfest with my version of Bortwimn. We'll see if this little article generates enough interest to end Mort's winning streak.

Lots o' luck to all entries!

Ok, I'm going to have at least two submissions, and each of these suckers is going to be well over the 1,200 word limit. Embarassed

I'll apologize in advance, but I just can't see detailing the history, appearance, and powers of the Bloodshield of Hextor and the Screaming Column in a mere 1,200 words. Happy

Note: Both of these magic items are malefic items that will be considered Vile Content. There will be nothing perverse or pornographic to go with them, but there will be morbid and horrible detail that will truly show the power of these dread items. The circumstances or creation and uses of these items is an affront to all that is good and decent in the universe, which you will see when you read about them.

    Thanx

    Nope, still writing it.

Got the Bloodshield submitted, but the Screaming Column is taking up a bit of work as I have to draw from a LOT of different sources (and am still brainstorming on some of its aspects).

I am writing about a magical item that casts a circle of writes like Mortellan so I can stand a snowballs chance in you know where.

That would be the "Quill of Mortellan"

Made from a cockatrice feather, this quill is the discarded remains of a failed attempt to make what eventually became Kuroth's Quill. The lesser, failed version fell into the hands of Uli merchants in Kester. Those who could write put it to good use composing scathing heresies against their neighbors to the east, all the while eloquently detailing the myriad wonder that is their grassy homeland of Ull. It is also alleged the Quill is responsible for a controversial map presaging a flood on Oerth and also in creating several blasphemous illuminations that mock the sanctity of the gods.

The Quill imparts the user with a +20 insight bonus on the Profession: Writer or Artist skill. Once per postfest it can also cast a "Writes Like Mortellan" spell circle, which hedges out all other writer's skill bonuses until the duration of the postfest is over.

    Ugh!

The Screaming Column is becoming quite a project. More than an item description, what I'm writing is also becoming a tale in itself. Expect a bit of a read, though I'd suggest that people with a high sensitivity to acrocity beware. This is quite possibly the most vile item on Oerth.

I have a few really short entries and one REALLY LONG one(it is a BIT over 1,200 words Embarassed ) turned in so far.

If I do a final entry of decent length I will pay more attention to the total word count. I promise! Don't butcher my entry please! Happy

Hmph, turns out that my next Marisuda post isn't really full of magical stuff, so I'll just make it a regular post instead of a postfest entry... Le sigh. I'm off to bed :D

Question: Now that the submission time is over, I wonder how many articles were generated. Does the volume of submissions was greater than last time?

The community shall know shortly. I am reluctant to commit to a date (until consulting with "management" this weekend), but we will get this Postfest up in a matter of days - not weeks. Then, voting will commence.

All of the submissions are great Good job, folks. I think everyone shall enjoy reading each entry.
