Another random heretical thought on Vecna:

What if these are all aspects of Vecna?
That is why they take people over so completely, and the Sword won't kill Vecna, but will work if you have one of his body parts attached.
As for why the Sword drove Kas to attack Vecna originally, it was all part of the plan. Vecna sacrificed himself to himself (like Odin) to gain insight and power.

Sounds pretty interesting, though I really don't like the Vecna Reborn mods and loathe the idea of Vecna as a god. I'm quite happy with him as a legend with a malign impact on the present.

No, Kas was chosen because he was treacherous.
More like an anti-Edmund from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
The old magic was evil betraying evil.
The older magic was sacrificing yourself to yourself.
Vecna let Kas slay him to appease the deities of the Old Faith, but set it up in such a way that he gained power from it.
Such is the way of Vecna.

Neat idea, Sam. Keeper of Secrets also strikes me as rather Odinic (along with the one eye). Perhaps Vecna is served by carrion birds, too....

Well The Hand and Eye of Vecna are a not thinly vield reference to the Corum books of Micheal Moorcock's Eternal Champion saga. Just like Black Razor is Stormbringer and the Suel having a very Melnibonean flavor to them.

Vecna also fits the concept/idea of the Lost Gods Rhynn and Kwll, too (as does Tharizdun, at least in name...).

heh, this is some thread necromancy here...

The Chronicles of Corum did come out some years before Brian Blume wrote up the hand and eye of vecna, but there really doesn't seem to be any other parallels between the two characters. Missing hands and eyes are hardly rarities in myth and the Hand and Eye of Vecna don't look or act like the Hand of Kwll or the Eye of Rhynn whatsoever. I think you'll need a bit more evidence than just a bald assertion that its a "thinly veiled reference" to make it so.

Blackrazor is more clearly like Stormbringer and Stormbringer and Elric are far more influential concepts. However, White Plume Mountain was written by a completely different set of people, so I think stretching to a "we love Moorcock" conspiracy is a bit far.

And the Melnibonean flavor of the Suel was entirely fan generated. There's next to nothing about them in canon and what there is doesn't show any particular Melnibonean strains. Unless you consider "ancient civization with wizards and dubious morals" to be clearly Melnibonean.
