Well, at least this time you have Bubbagump (my Hairfoot halfling "friend") standing in front of me, so I won't get knifed in the back . . . again! Shocked Laughing

    Excellent job, Glad! Cool

I read over at DF that he was done, but the formatting and editing is just extremely difficult because Len created so much, 100s of pages. Lot of volunteers trying hard though.

Im very glad to see the quality art that will go with it. With some GH text, I'd too buy a coloring book.

L4 is hundreds of pages long?! Shocked That really makes me wonder what is in it, but I am content to wait and be surprised by the finished product. Cool

Thanks for the kind words, fellas!

While I only had dealings, with regards to the L4 module, with doing the cover art for it, from what I gather, the module will be released sometime this fall and is around 96 or so pages.

And yeah, I think the module has been completed (as far as Len Lakofka writing it is concerned) for quite some time. The delay has come from the numerous editors/proofreaders who have started the project only to leave (for various reasons) the module to the "next guy." I think it finally landed into someone's hands over at DF that actually is seeing it through.

So, in short, the wait shouldn't be too much longer for L4: Devilspawn.

You can't go wrong with art based on the seemingly inevitable low-level stirge encounter. Happy

I'd even go so far to say that there is a marked level of improvement in this one. There's a lot of great character in the details, and it is my favorite of the bunch by far. Makes me want to write up an encounter for it right now. Very nice. Cool

Heh. "Bite the stirge." That almost sounds like an insult. I can just see a New York cabbie leaning out his window and shouting to somebody who forgot to tip, "Hey, buddy! Bite the stirge!"

Or an insulted high school girl, "Bite the stirge, dork. Of course I won't go out with you."

Heh. Or maybe I just have too much time on my hands... Wink

You will be happy to know my wife apparently read this. This morning I said something she didn't like, and without a moment's hesitation she replied, "Bite the stirge, baby!" By this afternoon my kids were saying it.

I owe it all to you, Glad27. And you thought your art was only good for putting on the covers of old-school adventures!

I'm glad I could help inspire a new "saying." I like it. Now, if you put this on a t-shirt and sell em' at RPG conventions and it takes off like hotcakes, just remember a starving artist, OK? Wink

And thanks for the kind words, everyone...it's much appreciated.

I should have another b&w drawing up, hopefully, by the end of this week. I've started on a new drawing that was inspired by a classic module.

I'll post it as soon as it's done. Cheers.

Yeah, I tried, rossik. (This was the only site that I posted the pic at where I didn't reveal the module this is from in the title of the pic.) Hopefully somebody else can guess where it's from.

And to answer your question, rossik...I've played D&D so many times through the years (although, sadly, not much anymore) that I'm sure I draw inspiration from a bunch of characters I've made up over the years. And that's a good point.....no cleric. At least not in the pic. Perhaps, since they're right at the entrance of the "tomb" Wink, the cleric could still be just outside.

Ding, ding, ding, ding....Tomb of Horrors it is.

I tried to capture a party that's just broke through the vines, and overhanging vegetation to reveal the actual corridor that leads into the tomb. I remember looking at the original module with it's illustration booklet back in the day and remembered how that illustration with the painted hallway with the curious brass box sticking out from it always peaked my interest.

I tried to stay true to the original Sutherland illustration of the corridor.

*Thanks for the kind words....I'm glad you guys are diggin' it.

I'm part of a trio of fantasy artists over at threeheadedtroll.com. My gallery is so outdated, and I'm pretty embarrassed by the art I have posted in it that I don't advertise about it much anymore. Unfortunately, I'm computer illiterate and I got tired of asking my buddy to post my new artwork up in my gallery, so now I just post my new stuff at the various sites. If somebody sees my art and I get work from it....cool. If not, then I still enjoy drawing and hope some people get a little enjoyment out of it, as well.

These are the original Trampier (not Sutherland as I originally stated...my bad) illustrations that came with the ToH's illustration booklet that I based my drawing on...

Another poster at another site stated it looked like the face from the demon statue on the PHB too. Trampier did paint the original PHB, so maybe he liked the image so much that he (in a round about way) included it on the wall mural of Acererak's tomb.

I meant PH. I haven't read through the module because I'm thinking someone else might DM it for me one day. I may have to look and see if there is a clue in it for who that might be.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words.

I'm still learning the ropes with all of this acrylic painting stuff, but it's a fun learning process. I'm getting ready to tackle my biggest artistic endeavor ever with a 15" x 20" painting dealing with a party going up against some gnolls and an ogre in a ruins setting. If it turns out halfway decent, I'll post it when it's done.

*rossik....the module is called "Red Tam's Bones" and will eventually be available over at DF.

    Gla"roomd's newest offering - a *big* painting

Glad ... as always, it looks great!
I am always glad to see our local folks doing stuff that makes Canonfire look even better. This one looks a little bigger than some of your previous work. Is it on a different sized stock, or is it just that the number of subjects and the in-frame space comprises a larger area (i.e., a larger "room")?

Can't wait to see it when the paint starts hitting the canvas. Smile

Love the latest stuff, but you should shorten the length of your arrows by about 25%. When drawn to the cheek, the arrow head will only extend outwards an inch or two from the end of the bow. The archer in the painting is basically firing a javelin-sized arrow. Also, when arrows sink into targets they tend to really sink in quite deep, or even go through the target unless they hit something solid dead square. Watch a few deer hunting programs and you will see arrows fly completely through the deer's rib cage. Sounds crazy, but its true. Armor will slow penetration, and if the target has back armor it may even stop the arrow at that point, leaving the arrow embedded into the target as much as it can without exiting. I recommend shortening the shaft visible on the arrow stuck in the gnoll in the sketch by half.

Also, that sketch should make for an awesome painting. Cool

    Thanks, fellas...much appreciated.

Icarus: Yeah, this one is bigger than most of my others that I do and it's definitely the biggest painting I've tackled thus far. The bugbear painting I posted prior to this sketch was 10"x 13" and this one will be 15"x 20". I do all of my paintings on heavyweight vellum illustration board. I knew I wanted to do a big battle scene, so I went with the bigger board for this one. I just hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew! Laughing

Cebrion: I appreciate the suggestion on the arrow. The measurement from the elf's cheek to where the arrow tip would stick beyond the bow at full draw is right at 3" (on the drawing itself) compared to the measurement of the cock-end of the arrow to where it's touching the breast plate of the gnoll (about 2") is about an inch in length difference.

I figure an elf's longbow using a bone-tipped arrow doesn't have quite the penetrating power when going through a metal breast plate compared to those hunting shows where the hunters are using compound bows with razord-tipped arrows through non-armor wearing deer.

    Arrow size

All very, very true about the arrows and whatnot.

But ... Ceb, can you be certain that the arrow hitting the gnoll hasn't just barely hit and is only just penetrating? I know the gnolls already falling, but, it's the artist's rendition, and all.

Also, I am not certain that I see a javelin-sized arrow anywhere? Are you extrapolating from how deep you assume the arrow is in the gnolls chest, or are you accidentally seeing the thng in the man's hand as extending from the bow, and looking like an arrow?

Perception changes Point of View, I suppose. :)

Like so many problems, this can be cleared up with a little inside knowledge. You see, the archer in question is using a bow he picked up among the Wolf Nomads. It is intended for mounted use, however, it was made for a nomad who is especially tall for his race. Thus, the bow is shorter than a longbow but still quite long for a shortbow. The arrows, on the other hand, were "acquired" from a gnoll archer who was killed three encounters prior to the one depicted. That archer was likewise taller than average for his race, and was using arrows specially tailored for his size and strength. Since the gnoll's bow was too large and heavy for our friend in the picture, he opted to keep his own bow. But since he was out of arrows he had no option but to take the oversized missiles he found in the gnoll's quiver. So the archer in the picture is using a bow only slightly too large for him with arrows that don't quite fit. He's suffering from a -2 penalty to his attack rolls and a -1 penalty to damage, since the combination is less than optimally effective. Fortunately, from that range he could hardly miss and scored a perfect heart shot. Well done, my archer friend! Cool

Yes, precisely because the gnoll is already falling down, and because there is no banana peel on the ground causing him to fall. Laughing

But, the arrows are made of bone, which fail to deeply penetrate most armor(and will shatter against plate armor), so the arrow is not in very deep apparently. If it were in deep, that much of the arrow would not be sticking out(i.e. it would need to be javelin length to do that).

Arrows being sunk into their targets just looks more vicious and nasty, which is why I think shortening the length of the exposed arrow would look better. Evil Grin As it is, this is what it looks like when you pick up a dice to see how much damage an arrow does and you roll a "1". Events in the game can't always be "perfect", but in art they can be. Wink

I look forward to seeing the next stage of this pic. Lots of character in there. Cool

Hahaha....I haven't checked back on this thread in a good while and rechecking it, I never could have guessed a simple thing such as "arrow penetration" in one of my doodles would bring up so much discussion.

Hey, if my art invokes ANY kind of talk....I'm happy. Wink

As far as the painting goes, I had full intentions of it being completed by this point. When I first posted the pencil sketch for the painting, it was right before me and the missus' were taking a vacation to Cancun for a week. When I got back I got started on the actual "painting" part and between having a couple big snow falls in our area, one of my major drains that runs under my house getting clogged and almost having my house catch on fire due to faulty wiring going to my hot water heater....it's been nothing short of a miracle getting any work done on the illustration up to this point.

It took two days to get the clog fixed, I just got the faulty wiring re-wired today and so starting tomorrow, I'll tackle the painting full force again. (keeps fingers crossed)

Here's the top of the painting that I've worked on so far to give you a glimpse of where I'm at with it to this point. (The flash of the camera made the biggest dwarf's cloak hood look like it had white fuzz all over it. That's just the paint reflecting off the light. And there's not a whole lot of detail on the smaller dwarf and elf due to them both being about the size of my thumb nail. Smaaaaall. ;)

    More soon, fellas.

    Thanks for the kind words!

Here's a couple more photos of the painting where she's at to this point. You'll have to forgive the terrible photos. I'm using a dinosaur of a digital camera (1.5 mega pixels if that tells you anything Laughing ) as my good one is with my wife who is out of town. I've still got a ways to go but I hope to be done with it by next week.

I'll tweak the ruins and stonework once everything else is finished but this is the basic layout of them...

I took a close up of the dwarf without the flash turned on because it kept washing out everything, but now it just looks dull. I'll be sure to use my good camera for the final photo once the painting is all done.

    Until next post....

Here's the nearly complete Ogre. The final pic with the good camera should reveal a lot more of the details on him (I hope) and I just realized there's a place I forgot to paint on him. Doh! I'll fix it before I post my next pic. Until then...

    Ogre head go "POP!"

Looking good so far, though the light blue bit between the leaping dwarf's hammer and his head and the wineskin and wall top looks like it should be painted in with background tree foliage.

    Great paintings by Glad

Glad ... I have to say ... I am really impressed by your use of colour. I've been illustrating for over 25 years, and I hadn't really ever bothered to do anything other than B&W until last year, and I must say ... you do it well. If there was a little green ::jealous:: smiley face that I could put here, I would! Shocked Wink It's amazing to see your stuff transform from your sketches to the complete work. I love watching the process.

Keep it up, my man. When we get GLH to get that Gallery up and going, I can't wait to showcase your stuff in it's section and a thread of your very own. ... with your name on it, and everything:!: Happy

This is interior artwork for a module to be released in the fall by LL. It was written by Tim Lowell and will be titled, "Voyage To Plague Island."

I've got a step-by-step process that I did for the cover that'll get posted a little later.

I took photos at various stages of the acrylic cover I did for the module, as well. I'm still working on the whole "painting thing," but it's still fun to tackle the ol' acrylics.

The first photo here is of the first rough thumbnail I doodled to get an idea of the layout for the cover. As you'll see, it changes quite a bit and I eventually go for a much closer image instead of this pulled back, wide shot that shows too much of the jungle and detracts from the action going on with the characters...

This is the actual initial pencils that I lay down on the illustration board I painted on...

In this one, I cover the figures with art masking fluid so that I can lay on the background layer in broad strokes without worrying about "dirtying" my characters...

The rest is just my quirky steps to get to the final image...

    And the final cover art...

This last piece is amazing work Glad27. Not to be critical, but I kind of preferred the color palette of the second to last picture over the one used in the final version...

    Thanks, Havard!

As far as the color pallette in the final piece, it was tweaked with PS to make the colors brighter so that they would pop off the cover like the old classic D&D modules did. The original holds a slightly more subdued look but is still quite colorful.

And MS, all of the pieces here will be in one module that is supposed to be released in the fall as part of LL's gaming system. The b&w pieces will be staying b&w, but I would like to eventually get around to doing a painting of a troll or two going up against a party.

Right now, I'm staring at two large sheets of Bristol board (14"x 17" apiece) with the beginnings of a massive battle between a good party going up against Orcus and some of his undead minions. When all is said and done, it'll be 28"x 17".

Wonderful piece Glad. I like art that you can look around at for a long time.

That halfling must be buff to single handedly drag the boat on shore.

    Of course he's buff; he's a halfling!

Don't take it personally, Bubbagump. Mort and I mistook him for a Bracegirdle. Shocked

We didn't realize he was a Hairfoot. Wink

Yeah, it's a female halfing, thief. The first one I've ever drawn, now that I think about it. The client that hired me to do this illustration wanted a female character to be in the drawing and since he specifically had the roles of the male characters already decided on, the she-halfing got the boat pullin' duties. Smile

I've got a "dwarven clan vs a band of goblinoids" b&w piece in the works as I type this. I'm off to Con On The Cob this coming up weekend to show off some of my artwork (I've gone to the con the last two years, so this'll be my third) and plan on working on it while I'm there. It's always nice to be around fellow fantasy artists to draw inspiration from.

I'll post it as soon as it's done, fellas! Until then....

Ooops! my bad! Didn't examine the anatomy that closely! Razz

*But the Scholar thinks to himself that Carlanco did! Hmmmm.* Confused

Just kidding, of course, Carlanco. Nice catch!

(That's also why I missed the hairfeet on the first look!) Embarassed

Say Glad, where happens Con On The Cob? Got a website?

It's in Hudson, Ohio this Thursday thru Sunday. I'll be getting there around noon on Friday and stay until it ends on Sunday.

    The website is: www.cononthecob.com

It's a great con that's growing every year but is still relatively small, especially compared to the likes of, say, Gencon. They have an adults only party on Saturday that separates the men from the boys. It's the one con I don't miss each year.

Thanks for that website, Glad. Going to look into that one for sure. Cool

And thanks for that "gift," Carlanco! I can only image how many gold pieces you spent on those goggles . . . and just for me! Aww, shucks! Embarassed

I can "see" a lot better now. Wink Laughing

Can't believe it took me this long to view your artwork. Yes it feels like 1st edition artwork. Some of it reminds me of the Dungeon and Dragons cartoon artwork. If you and Mort merged we would have the worlds greatest collaboration. I'm Glad to have you on the boards. Pun intended!

I like how clean the lines are in your work as if its on the page just waiting for you to reveal it. If you get a chance you should definitely join the chats on Thursday nights fresh ideas and topics are always appreciated, especially those of us who have not fallen prey to the undead.
