The River Campaign - Chapter 4: Lake Quag

The next installment of The Great Flanaess River Adventure, set for release on 4/14, is a big one.
As Lake Quag is a big lake, that makes it a big chapter – 93 pages.

This chapter has two major adventures, two minor adventures, and a number of encounters along the way from when they leave the Fler River and enter the lake, until they reach Schawartzenbruin, the capital of Perrenland.

The first stop for the player characters will most likely be Ungra Balan for this is the first location where they will be able to trade their items and fully resupply their canoes. Depending on what occurred when they came between the Tiger & Wolf Nomads about to do battle in Chapter 3, will depend upon how the party is received in the Wolf Nomad town.

As the player characters begin paddling south, they will encounter The Island of the Mist Dragons – an adventure based on the famous Chinese Legend of the White Snake and incorporating Gary Gygax's Oriental Adventures rulebook.

Then, when they near the village of Traft, the adventuring party will find a battle already underway. Iuz is up to his old tricks and he is looking to claim Perrenland for himself. To keep his name out of it, he has orchestrated a battle by proxies – namely orcs.

Further south, the player characters may encounter the lair of the bullywugs, before moving on to their next destination and supply town – Schwartzenbruin, the capital of Perren-land. There they may find a reprieve at both the Quenching Quaggoth Tavern in a visit with the owner of the cabin in the Wolf Nomad near the Burneal Forest and in the Chapel of the Fharlanghn Priests – where—if they have it—they may want to inquire about translating The Journal of Sormod.

We hope you enjoy this next installment in the River Campaign.

The Legend of the White Snake

In full disclosure and if anyone is interested, we spun off the portion of Chapter 4 titled "Island of the Mist Dragons" and made it a stand alone Oriental Adventures game called "The Legend of the White Snake." It is available on Dragonsfoot here:

    http://www.dragonsfoot.org/php4/archive.php?sectioninit=FE&fileid=399&watchfile=

The game was based on a visit to Hangzhou, China, in which one of us got to visit the pagoda that stands overlooking a lake. The legend of the white snake is told inside the pagoda and it is about a magician who throws the remains of a failed experiment into the lake. A turtle and a white snake eat the materials and turn into humans. The turtle loves the white snake, but his love is unrequited. The white snake falls in love with a human, but the turtle eventually gets his revenge, turning the girl back into a white snake, casting her into the pagoda's dungeon, and then turning himself back into a turtle. The pagoda is said to ride on the back of the turtle for all eternity.

There are many versions of this legend and it has been turned into both a musical and a movie in China. It sounded too much like D&D, so we adapted it to Lake Quag for The Great Flanaess River Adventure. And, since we were trying to stay close to early AD&D, it allowed us to use Gary Gygax's Oriental Adventures Rulebook.
