    Who is Harm Bumastus?

I have been working on a pretty extensive personal project recently and have run into a really annoying speed bump that I was hoping someone could help me out with.

The project is sort of an "ultimate" version of the City of Greyhawk. I've compiled data from all the published sources over the years and have also been combing the internet for the best additions to the city so that I can include them. One source that has obviously been very useful is Maldin's Greyhawk map, index, and NPC roster. http://melkot.com/locations/cogh/cog-index.html

My question is: who the HELL is "Harm Bumastus?"

He is listed as the occupant of "F29 Residence - Harm Bumastus" on Malden's index. I cannot find any mention of this NPC anywhere else, even with the help of my buddy, Google. What's more frustrating is that I am nearly certain I have heard this name before (I even think I've used the NPC's name before). I suspect he is casually mentioned somewhere in the original City of Greyhawk boxed set in some off-hand way. Much like "F30 Warehouse of Morton Hammel" is only casually mentioned in "Chapter 8: Adventures" under the "King of the Rats" heading.

The completist in me would appreciate any help in my search.

    Thanks!

    Hmm. Confused

Never thought to ask before. However, I speak with "Maldin" nearly every week day, via Skype . . . so I'll ask him for you. Should have an answer by tomorrow evening -- Eastern Standard -- and I'll post it here for you. Happy

If you haven't received your return e-mail from "Maldin" yet, he informs me that Harm Bumastas is a character in one of his campaigns and -- given that it's his campaign map -- he put Harm's place on it.

He and I worked hard to put all the Canon street names on a map as well -- I use it in my own campaign -- and he keeps promising to put it up on his site for everyone else's use, but hasn't done so yet.

    Damn procrastinator! Evil

Hope that answers your question. As I said, he tells me that he got your e-mail and will respond to it . . . sometime. Laughing

Well that certainly makes sense! The name of the NPC sounded really familiar to me, as if I had read it or used it someplace before. I guess that someplace that I read it must have been right on the index from his site - HA!

I really appreciate you speaking with him!

One of the other names that is a little hard to track down from any published material is Loz Toron {F28: The Grey Tower of Loz Toron}.

The only source I've been able to gain any information on this name is a really obscure mention from Rob Kuntz on Dragonsfoot that reads:

    Quote:
"There are many hidden realms. Several of these correspond to the corners, or cracks, of planes that gods of this dimension cannot fathom. Much escapes through these apertures that cannot again reenter them. Some are creatures with forms recognizable by us of similar make; others, like those that the great Loz-Toron described before his demise, are as alien to us as we are to them."

There is also a description of him in the "Duicarthex, Chapter Two: Greyhawk, City and Domain of" that reads:

    Quote:
"Loz Toron; CN; Human male (Half-brass dragon) Sor16?"

Beyond that, I can find nothing else. Perhaps an NPC from an old Living Greyhawk mod?

If anyone is interested, here's my tentative write up of F28: The Grey Tower of Loz Toron (at least until I can find something more official)

    Quote:
F28: The Grey Tower of Loz Toron
This is one of the most feared edifices in the Foreign Quarter; most people believe the place is haunted. There is a strange caretaker who can occasionally be seen coming in or out of the tower’s single door at the top of a cracked stone staircase. His name is not known, as he only speaks to those he must in as limited manner as possible. It is widely known that the old grey tower was once the residence and laboratory of Loz Toron, a powerful sorcerer thought to have dragon blood in his veins. The sorcerer has not been seen for over a decade and he is presumed dead. The rights to the tower legally passed to his caretaker and he has been the place’s only known occupant ever since.
Residents of the quarter give the place a wide berth and there are frequent reports of terrible sounds that seem to emanate from somewhere inside the upper heights of the tower. The sounds are described as bestial and insane but so far, no city representitives have ventured to begin an official investigation.
DM’s Notes: The missing sorcerer Loz Toron [CN human (dragonblood) male Sor16] had indeed been absent from his former home since 592 CY. The strange magic-user constructed a portal within the Grey Tower that connected to the Far Realm and passed through, never to return. His assistant and caretaker of the tower, Irvin Hammet [LN human male Sor5] has remained true to his vow to remain and uphold the wards that Loz Toron put in place to protect the city, in the event that anything were to seek escape through the portal from the other side. Irvin has begun to go a little mad himself and refuses to engage in conversation in the rare instances he is seen outside of the tower. The creatures he has seen attempting to pass through from the Far Realm have unnerved him completely, and he is growing more and more unsettled by the voices he’s been hearing in his head of late.

At any rate, this sort of research stuff is pretty fun for me. Thanks again for the help, Mystic-Scholar! :)

At the moment -- 4:29 Eastern Standard time -- "Maldin" thinks that Loz Toron was an addition made by Erik Mona.

He's going to check that out for you. Happy? Laughing

Well, MadZagyg, I have to take it back. Seems that "Maldin" did get the street map posted to his site:

Remember, all of those names come from canon sources, so . . . enjoy! Wink

Loz Toron and the 6 Threads Manuscript

"This auction is for Six Threads Manuscript 1985. This piece of fiction was written in 1985 by Rob and deals with two clothiers, Marzook and Tholan of the City of Kalibruhn, who are summoned by the wizard Loz Toron to help him fashion a fantastic samite cloth woven with six highly magical threads. Only the clothiers will be able to discern these cleverly hidden threads but they soon find they are compelled to act against their morals to complete their task. Loz Toron has long been a part of Rob's World of Kalibruhn, living on an eponomously named isle off of the major continent. Includes 9 page chapter outline, two completed chapters comprising 32 pages, and, a much later, one-page manuscript from 2002 detailing Loz Toron's Illusion Box, a magic item associated with the Six Threads wizard that gives an insight into the enigmatic figure.

This is a really fantastic, if incomplete, sword and sorcery yarn by master story teller Rob Kuntz!" < https://www.ebay.com/itm/Six-Threads-Manuscript-1985/123266401002?hash=item1cb34002ea:g:xu0AAOSwKLVbVTjn >
