Greyhawk on bulletin boards vs. social media

The following discussion went down on an old-school D&D Facebook group today. Interesting reflection of where our hobby is going.

OP: So if this is volume 3 where is 2 and 1[?]

*1 and 2 Came with the box set

    *Damn

*I have the box set and it came with this (picture of contents)

*I was just wondering this last night - only two books in the box set, vol III and the other unlabeled book.

*Knowing E. Gary Gygax, he had them on the back burner and they just never got published. He got forced out at TSR less than 3 years after the WoG boxed set was released. Lots of stuff never saw the light of day thanks to Lorraine **** Williams. I mean, er, Dille, uh, Williams.

    *[correct answer]

*Sounds like your set is incomplete, sorry to say.

Of course, the answer can be found in the forward on the very first page of the other book in the box.

This simple question generated three ignorant responses and three wrong answers from owners of the set, one posted immediately after the unread correct answer.

It's also a reflection of real-life consumerism and discourse:
*Collector/flipper culture -- we collect without reading and buy without consuming. Doesn't matter what's in the box, what matters is if it's complete, how much it's worth, and posting pictures of the bounty. To buy is to know and experience.
*Speaking with authority on things we know nothing about.
*Mixing conjecture and speculation with personal opinions and name-calling.
*Asking questions before attempting the most basic research.
*Interjecting more misinformation immediately following facts.
*Speaking without browsing, reading, or listening.
*Social media lends itself to vanity, pictures, and mansplaining, not facts.

Any chance you're expecting someone to disagree with you? Laughing
