    Vale of Highfolk

    by Dungeonmeister

The Vale of Highfolk has a twofold face. At the same time as being a land of Men in the towns and villages of the valley (where Humans, Elves, Halflings and Gnomes live in harmony), but also and above all being a land of Elves in the immense forest of Vesve, the largest forest of the North. Within the forest itself the law of the Lord of the Elves rules the different clans spread over the green ocean, some parts of which are forbidden to humans. The northern and eastern edges of the Vesve has become a battleground for the forces of Iuz (an evil demigod ruler of a nearby country) has sent his minions as an invasion force.

Highfolk is a land of small communities where elves and humans fight side by side against the common enemy. With a population density far lower than that of Alaska, a campaign located in Highfolk contains a strong flavor of the Lord of the Rings. The forest, immense and often deadly and impenetrable, controlled by the elves from their capital of Flameflower, forbidden to humans. The elven clans, friendly to the humans, work with the human rangers based in their stronghold of Quaalsten. Even further north, the gnomes are settled in Gildenhand and are allies against the forces of evil. The valley along the Velverdyva River is the only safe trade route between Furyondy, Highfolk Vale, Perrenland and the Wolf nomads. This valley is where most of the 10,000 humans of the region live, concentrated mainly in the town of Verbeeg Hill and more especially in Highfolk City, whose mayor tries to maintain harmony between the people but also with the allied people of Veluna and Furyondy.

DMs more at ease with campaigns set in the open air than in the dark alleys of big cities or in the nauseating corridors of a thousand-year-old crypt, and if the close presence of an emblematic enemy (Iuz) is interesting, the Highfolk vale is made for you.

    Country specific resources:
    The Marklands, by Carl Sargent
Living Greyhawk Journals (country update articles)
City of skulls by Carl Sargent
Iuz the evil by Carl sargent

    Adventures in this country include:
    - The struggle for power between the different elven clans, maybe leading to civil war.
    - Unmasking Shadowclaw agents from Iuz who have infiltrated the region.
    - Emergence of an ancient Green Dragon, which perverts some elven clans.
    - Patrols in the Vesve Forest and skirmishes with the orcs of Iuz.
    - Discover the mysteries of the Timeless Tree.

    Adventures in nearby areas include:
    - Infiltrating the lands of Iuz (the City of skulls adventure by Carl Sargent for example).
    - Exploration and making alliances with the Wolf Nomads against Iuz.
    - Adventuring in Furyondy and Perrenland.
    - Mountain adventures in the Yatil mountains and the Clatspur range.
    - Participating in naval combat between the forces of Iuz and Furyondy for control of the Whyestil lake.

On the other hand, the Vale of Highfolk is not for those who dream of long rides on a destrier in armor, nor for those who love the shady atmosphere of big cities and to a lesser extent not really for dwarves either...
