    Valley of the mage

    by PupickDad

The Valley of the Mage is a great place of alluring mystery for any campaign. It is remote, tucked into the forbidding & dangerous Barrier Peaks with only one guarded entrance & the residents do not permit intrusions from the outside world. Numerous canonical & fan sources exist to help you decide how to best fit this locale into your campaign. The potential for adventure here is almost endless.

    Country specific resources:
-S4 The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, Booklet 2 (Valley elf entry p. 12), Gary Gygax, TSR Hobbies, Inc., 1982
-Featured Creatures, Dragon #67, Gary Gygax, TSR Hobbies, Inc., Nov. 1982
-Valley Elf, Tasteless Song of the Month, Dragon #72, anonymous, TSR Hobbies, Inc., April 1983
-Monster Manual II (Valley elf entry p. 63), Gary Gygax, TSR, Inc., 1983
-Sea of Death, Gary Gygax, Ace/New Infinities, 1987
-Greyhawk Adventures, James Ward, TSR, Inc., 1988
-WG12 Vale of the Mage, Jean Rabe, TSR, Inc., Jan. 1990
-MC5 Monstrous Compendium Greyhawk Adventures Appendix, various authors, TSR, Inc., 1990
-Enchiridion of the Fiend-Sage, Living Greyhawk Journal #2, Sean K. Reynolds, WotC, Inc., Nov. 2000
-The Vale of the Mage, Rick “Duicarthan” Miller, Oerth Journal #18, Jan. 2006

    Adventures in this country include:
-GA1 Entrance to the Valley of the Mage
-WG12 Vale of the Mage (hex crawl & macguffin quest)
-A mission to make contact with the reclusive Valley elves or the Mage.
-An expedition to explore the mysteries & rumors surrounding the region & it’s mighty wizard.
-The Ekbir description in the Living Greyhawk Gazeteer strongly implies that the Valley elves stole the Cup & Talisman of Al-Akbar. Go get them!
-Find the source of the Javan River.
-Thieving mission to retrieve valuable magic items.

    Adventures in nearby areas include:
    - Dealing with giants such as in G1 The Steading of the Hill Giant Chief.
    - Mountain adventures such as S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks.
    - Exploring the country of Ull such as with "The Wonders of Ull", Michael “Mortellan” Bridges, 2010
    - The dangerous Dim Forest & the troubled Duchy of Geoff lie immediately outside the valley’s entrance.

This region is difficult to begin a campaign in unless the PCs are gnomes and/or Valley elves. Valley elves only exist here in the D&D multiverse so it is vital to the background of any Valley elf PCs. It is best used as a destination for campaigns starting elsewhere in the Flanaess. Published accounts can be contradictory so remember to make it your own.
