Who were the Red Rampart Guards?

I was reading Dragon #311 and it had a column by Gygax where he talks about running Melf through some solo adventures and mentions that Mordenkainen inducts him into the Red Rampart Guards. Anyone heard or done anything with this organization?

If Mordenkainen inducts him, it must be part of his army, right?

Dragon #37 gives Mordenkainen the following troops:

    Medium Cavalry: 500 (Regulars)
    Light Cavalry: 500 (Regulars)
Light Horse Archers: 1,000 (Regulars), 2,000 (Levied)

Mordenkainen having an army, never seemed right to me, but of course Gygax loved his wargaming.

Sounds good to me. Has anyone done any work on Mordy's army?

I can't recall which issue of Dragon it was, but I believe that the article discussing the obsidian dragon mentioned one allied to Mordenkainen and also presented information on his forces and citadel.
