Funny you should mention the drow, since I always toyed with the notion of having even the oldest elves consider the drow to be a myth-something people use to scare their children into obeying:

Don't wander into the woods, or the drow will get you!

Stop crying, or the drow will hear you!

Eat your vegetables, or I'll tell the drow!

As much as I love R.A. Salvatore's books, I found it a tad annoying how everyone from northern barbarians to the desert peoples of the south knew about the drow and feared them-hence why I went for the whole myth thing. I was also annoyed by how Salvatore seemed to portray the dark elves as nearly invincible-always right, always able to get by whatever defenses their opponents set up, always able to outsmart everyone else, always able to know what their opponents were thinking, always able to win every fight.

Hence why I thought of developing the city of Goblinaragard some more in a future article. Goblinaragard, for the record, is one of my "Newly Discovered Dungeons of the Flanaess", and one of my personal favorites, since it turns some of the traditional fantasy clichés on their collective ear.

To make a long story short, the goblins of the city played upon the natural superiority feelings the drow had, and their own reputation for being cowardly and stupid, and lulled the drow into a false sense of security when the latter invaded. When they actually clashed, the goblins dealt the drow a devastating, crushing-and humiliating-defeat. I can imagine the drow being too full of themselves to give their opponents as much credit as they deserve, hence why they make strategic blunders like the one just described.

And yes, it is a jab at Salvatore, as much as I love his work. ;) He mentions the phrase "Doomed are those who believe they understand the desires of the drow", but I think that, on observing drow nature, someone like Eclavdra could come up with a response:

Damned are those drow who let their own hubris get the better of them.
