A Magical Census of the Gran March
Date: Sat, August 02, 2008 Topic: Greyhawk Gazetteer
An attempt to reconcile humans, demi humans, humanoids and all the other beasties in a magical world. The base populations of this article are based on numbers from the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, and then great liberties have been taken.
The simple thesis of this article is thus: The reason the population of the World of Greyhawk, as presented in the LGG, are so low comparative to real world and historic examples is because of all of the other races and creatures that are present in this fantastic world.
Humanoids, with their destructive nature and rapid reproduction are a prime component in this equation. However, other creatures, such as dragons, are equivalent to many, many humans. It is only the disparate, unorganized, chaotic or isolated nature of these creatures that allow humanity to maintain its precarious hold on civilization. With this equation, humanity and its allies actually hold little pockets of civilization connected by dangerous and roads, trails and paths.
The following census is highly arbitrary, and includes all monsters from the Monster Manual and the Fiend Folio that I feel is appropriate to the March as I envision it.

The races chosen are broken down by the categories presented in the Monster Manual. The population column describes the actual number of creatures present in the Gran March and in the wild lands surrounding it. The ratio to humans indicates the number of each race in comparison to the number of Marchers. The Eco Factor is a representation of the race and their ecological effects in comparison to the environment. This does not solely represent destruction, but also includes avariciousness and their consumption. Finally, this is computed into the Population Equivalent. If all the races were magically converted to an equivalent number of humans, this would show how many human would live in the Gran March.
