Hello everyone. Regenerating trolls remind me of the giants from Thomas the Covenant and especially the Unas from Stargate. It's possible that such a monster exists in Norse literature. Has anyone developed a legend explaining the curse of these giants? Thank you.
The specific D&D trolls come from the book Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson, along with several other bits. Anderson was of Danish heritage, so he knew his trolls.
As for developing them for Oerth, I have. :)

Trolls are the result of the decline of giants. They are the end path of the warped and twisted fomor, being so horribly deformed and twisted that their bodies regenerate.
I remember Poul Anderson's *Three Hearts and Three Lions* quite well. It seems to me that for Tolkien, trolls descended from the Ents through Melkor's evil magic. Regarding giants, ogres and trolls share the same god, Vaprak the Destroyer.
I also read online: *The Ogre Gods* (Les Ogres-Dieux): A critically acclaimed dark fantasy French graphic novel series by Hubert Boulard and Bertrand Gatignol that follows a decadent royal lineage of giant ogres.

Trolls are one of the creatures that can be born from the spilled blood of Erythnul (along with humans, gnolls, bugbears, and ogres), so I've toyed with extending that idea so that it isn't just a trick Erythnul can do, but one of the mythological origins of all these creatures (yes, including humans), in the way the Gigantes were born from the spilled blood of Uranus in Greek mythology. There doesn't have to be a single origin myth that everyone in the world agrees on, but that could be one of them, Erythnul as a primal chaos monster from which other monsters emerged.
