songs for the cleric

not sure where this should be posted, so sorry if its in the wrong place.
it's also very long!!

here are some songs my two favourite characters, one a cleric of Pholtus and the other of St. Cuthbert, used to sing, much to the annoyance of the party as they would sing them every time they went into battle, and when they awoke in the morning!!

O Blinding Light
(Anthem of the followers of Pholtus)
(sung to the tune of O christmas tree)

O blinding light! O blinding light!
Thy light has ever changed me.
O blinding light! O blinding light!
Thy light has purified me.
Not only there when summer's here,
but also when it’s cold and drear.
O blinding light! O blinding light!
Thy light has so embraced me.

O blinding light! O blinding light!
The one true path you’ve shown me.
O blinding light! O blinding light!
The sinners all will fear thee.
But in the end the way is clear,
the sinners will all suffer here.
O blinding light! O blinding light!
All shall turn and serve thee.

O blinding light! O blinding light!
The light that shines so brightly!
O blinding light! O blinding light!
The law you lay will guide me.
From day to day, from noon ‘til night,
the blasphemers we shall fight.
O blinding light! O blinding light!
The light that shines so brightly!

O blinding light! O blinding light!
The sinners all will fear thee.
O blinding light! O blinding light!
How richly thee hath blessed me.
Thou bidst us true and faithful be,
and trust thine word undoubtedly
O blinding light! O blinding light!
You will always guide me.

Prayer to Pholtus

O Pholtus, who art in Arcadia,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy light is pure.
Thy law shall be obeyed,
On Oerth as it is in Arcadia.
Give us this day our daily tasks,
and punish us our trespasses,
as we punish those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into blasphemy,
but help us smite evil.
For yours is the one true path,
the light and the law.
The righteous shall prevail,
For ever and all eternity,
There is no other way.
Amen.

Pholtus’ psalm

Pholtus is my shepherd; I am the flock.
He maketh me to convert the unbelievers to his way:
he leadeth me on the one true path.
He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk the Oerth surrounded by sinners and blasphemers,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; the sun and the moons they comfort me.
Thou givest me strength to smite mine enemies:
thou lightest my way in the face of darkness and deception.
The one true way will be with me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the plane of Arcadia forever.

The light Brigade

For the Light, For the Light,
For the Light onward!
Into the Hordes of Chaos,
Rode the Light Brigade.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the Evil scum!
Into the Hordes of Chaos
Rode the Light Brigade.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man afraid?
No ‘cos the light was true
the enemy was sundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
theirs not to reason why,
theirs but to do and die:
Into the Hordes of Chaos
Rode the Light Brigade.

Sinners to left of them,
Sinners to right of them,
Sinners in front of them
blasphemers and heathens
Stormed at with bolt and spell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the Light Brigade.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Smiting the sinners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered:
Plunged in the spells and smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
living and undead
Reeled from the sabre-stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back,
Gallant Light Brigade.

Sinners to the left of them,
Sinners to the right of them,
sinners behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with bolt and spell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
the Brave Light Brigade.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble Light Brigade!

St. Cuthbert’s song
(sung to the tune of St. Trinians)

Followers of St. Cuthbert
Put your armour on
Grab your trusty weapon
Ready to right the wrong
The battle is upon us
Might is always right
Trample out the sinners
Glory in our plight

St. Cuthbert St. Cuthbert
Our battle cry
St. Cuthbert St. Cuthbert
Will never die

Stride towards your fortune
Boldly on your way
Never once forgetting
It’s the only way
Let our motto be broadcast
“strike the cudgel hard”
He who worships evil
Always comes off worst

St. Cuthbert St. Cuthbert
Our battle cry
St. Cuthbert St. Cuthbert
Will never die

Welcome to Canonfire!, zedekiah! FYI, the actual lyrics to "O Blinding Light" were printed in Paul Stormberg's interview with Gary Gygax (in Oerth Journal #12). Their exchange follows:

Quote:
Q: When I played in a D&D game you ran set in Castle Greyhawk I played a priest of Pholtus. When I introduced my character, Nodee Gristomb, you sang “O Blinding Light”, the hymn/anthem of the Pholtus faithful. What are the words to “O Blinding Light”?
A: Few indeed: “O Blinding Light, O light that blinds, I cannot see, look out for me!” It is a steal from a Firesign Theater recording, “Don’t Crush that Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers.”

Hi DMPrata,
Thanks for the welcome.

i always felt the original lyrics were rather "limited" Laughing

i wrote my lyrics for some characters when i first played the temple of elemental evil back in '86. clerics were my favourite class, mainly because i was crap at running any other class else except for fighters.

this is a great site with a wealth of information, although i haven't played or DM'ed for many years i still like to see what's out there, although i've only been a user of 1st edition AD&D and still have all the books from decades ago.
i have always been a fan of the world of greyhawk, i did play in the forgotten realms setting once or twice but i never liked it.
