What alignments were Rary and Robilar before they turned evil (and yes, I know Robilar turns back in "Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk Castle"...) Does the book "Rary the Traitor" tell what Rary's motives were for betraying the Circle of Eight? I'm clueless about these two characters, and want to know more... - AnimeFan

Rary was listed as true neutral in The City of Greyhawk boxed set. Rary's motivations are a bit of a can of worms. Officially he simply believed that, with his greater intelligence, he would make a better ruler than anyone else. After long and careful deliberation, he decided the Circle of Eight were a bunch of bumbling idiots that were only getting in the way. He's kind of a traditional megalomaniacal supra-genius. It's worth noting that he does have a higher intelligence and wisdom score than the other members of the Circle.

Others prefer to think that he and Mordenkainen were in cahoots, or that he acted as he did because Mordenkainen was up to something even more sinister and Rary felt obligated to stop him.

Robilar was listed as lawful evil in his original appearance in The Rogues Gallery. According to Rob Kuntz, Robilar's player, in the Oerth Journal #7, he started his career as neutral but drifted into law and evil over the course of play. He was an amiable, loyal sort of lawful evil, though, unlikely to betray his friends. Rob Kuntz said he still behaved as if he was neutral in most respects, but those who weren't his friends shouldn't trust him. I guess we're meant to believe that Robilar was exchanged with a doppleganger who lacked his neutral tendencies. Link to Oerth Journal #7

Yeah, the 3.5 adventure Expedition to Greyhawk Ruins states that he found a cursed magic item called (I think) the Sphere or Orb of Opposition, and that it exchanged the real Robilar for a alternate-world counterpart. I had been under the assumption that Robilar wasn't evilly-aligned, just his counterpart, but now I know better! Thanks for the correction...

"The House on Summoner Court" was also published in Oerth Journal #7. This version is somewhat larger than the version that was in Shadis.

Thanks I'd bought the Shadis issue and remembered it was at RPG Archive but had forgotten about the issue with it thought your earlier post regarding the OJ #7 was more backgroud information for the thread.
