If you wish to start pre 2e, I would say any time prior to CY580 would be fine. The first campaign in which I participated (which started with the World of Greyhawk folio edition) we began the first day of Coldeven CY577.

Get the World of Greyhawk boxed set(circa 1983), or a PDF of it. It starts out at about 576 CY. From the Ashes covers the past and highlights events in the mid to late 580's CY. The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer rehashes past material, and adds more material to where From the Ashes left off, and goes up to babout 592-4 CY or so? The material developed of the Living Greyhawk Campaign has brought things up to 598 CY, if you want to use that material.
There is also a book called The Adventure Begins, but it doesn't really add all that much to what is already dovered in the other things I mentioned. _________________ - Moderator/Admin (in some areas)/Member -

ok guys, i decided to start at 575: 2 years from the firts report of the scarlet brotherhood and five years from the "iuz accident" :)
BTW, grey wiki say: "After the accidental freeing, good-aligned troops raze Robilar's estate".
so whats happened to the "estate" ? acctually, what is this state? lands? castle?
is it a ruin now/then?

Good man!
Your best bet is to go straight from the 83' boxed set and ignore all of that other garbage.
You'll find yourself hating Greyhawk if you travel down that dark path.
Do with the setting as was intended: start with 83', possibly glean what you can from the later 'coporate-make-money projects' for ideas, and rely upon your players to develop the world and bring it to life.

not sure it has ever been adressed officialy before... so why not go with that old Greyhawk standby and make it up (and if it turnes out cool, submit it here to canonfire so the rest of us can enjoy your ideas).
