Hello, my name is Brian but most people just call me "Glad" due to my username...either works for me. First time here but I've been a fan of the Greyhawk setting since 82' (the year I was introduced to D&D.) I don't get a chance to play much anymore but when I do, I prefer good ol' GH 1e or 2e. Since I don't get a chance to play very much anymore, I find myself just doodling fond memories of my gaming sessions back when the diet of choice was Dominos pizza and a two liter of Mountain Dew.

Anyways, I didn't see a specific art forum but thought some might like to see a newbie's take on some classic creatures and situations. I hope you do.

You'll find that there are quite a few of the "Old Guard" like yourself here at Canonfire!, and a lot of newer folks as well.

That's some really nice art too! Please take a look at The Oerth Journal issues here. We are always looking for artists to contribute in whatever way that they are willing or able to(no pressure at all, really). Canonfire also has an Adventure Path project that will(hopefully) get underway in the near future, and we have no artist whatsover for it.

Glad your work is amazingly cool. It has that old school D&D feel-semi serious and semi-comical eye for detail and expression. Art nowadays in RPGs is always so stern, posed and edgy it doesn't have the light-hearted adventure feel that your work brings. If I had to compare your work to a past artist it would be Jim Holloway. Kudos!

I can call 'em. Cool deal, Glad. The next set of drawings are great too. Do I see a scene from White Plume Mountain in the second one? ;)
And the third one, the dwarf pinned by a dragon foot -on a pile of gold- and reaching for his axe. That is an inspired situation you just dont see in actual game play. That's the stuff I like! Keep it up!

Hi Brian---

You've got a great style, and while strongly-reminiscent of Holloway, I think you bring a certain edginess to your art that is usually trumped by humor in his (I'm a big fan of Holloway as well; his work in RJK's Cairn of the Skeleton King and Tower of Blood, however, shows that he can do the dark side too ;) ).

Excellent artwork! While I like most fantasy artwork, I like "old school" artwork above all else; it has more of an "adventure" feel which was our campaign atmosphere rather than an "epic" feel which is the path quite a bit of today's art follows.

I remember a while back it was asked you one would do to market GH. Many people talked about multi-hundred page books in the vein of LGG, etc. I said somthing like, I would only do 32 page modules with artwork like in the first generation. Something about it just right.

To be honest, I hadn't picked up a pencil in a couple of months (summer activities and all) and decided it was time to do so. Unfortunately, when I decided this I didn't have an idea in my head for a drawing so I took my trusty MM out and randomly opened it to a page (pg. 139 in this case) and drew a scene depicted around the creature that happened to be on that page...a Spirit Naga.

Wow!

Awesome old-school art! While I do like some of the newer breed of artists in D&D and fantasy in general, I still have some serious love for the old school. Brian/Glad, you have truly captured the spirit of D&D. Thank you very much for sharing.

Yeah, I was hoping people could tell that the bulette was jumping up and down out of the ground, like a dolphin. He may be "hopping" into that purple worm's mouth if the adventurers can close that portable hole fast enough. Wink

Hey, at least my doodle is creating some conversation...I don't guess an artist can ask for much more than that.

This drawing was a bit tough in the sense that I knew without words, it was going to be hard to convey what I was trying get across in the drawing.

The party is actually jumping into a portable hole (the black oval that they're jumping into...that's not an opening that the purple worm is making...although he his real close to the surface of the plains) and depending on how you interpret the magic item, the characters are actually jumping into an extradimensional 10' deep space. I drew it to suggest that if they can get it completely shut before the bulette gets to them, then they technically don't exist there at the point where the bulette will jump into the earth, but instead would wind up in the purple worm's maw.

Now, if the bulette can get to them before they can shut the portable hole up, then that's a whole different ballgame. At that point, I'd think the bulette would be partially in the PH and partially out (hindlegs kicking in the air) and then the purple worm could come up and technically eat both the party that's in the partially closed PH AND the bulette.

Although, the purple worm would probably have serious indigestion due to the portable hole, not to mention a thrashing P.O.'d bulette.

But that's just my interpretation. And I plan on putting some more art up as soon as I can find the time to do some more personal stuff. I've been pretty busy with actual art work for publishers lately, which isn't a bad thing, but it's kept me from doing as much of my own art as I'd like to be doing.

I think it might actually work... if the party can get into the portable hole and close it from the inside the buellete would ram right into the ground where they had just been. Up comes the worm and swallows the landshark. Hopefully the party will have enough air in the hole so that when they run out of fresh air and open the hole back up the coast is clear.

As a DM I think I'd allow my characters to pull it off with a couple of dexterity checks and good roleplaying but then, being the sadistic bastard I am, I'd punish them a bit for getting away from my monster Evil Grin

perhaps when they reopen the hole they find themselves suspended in mid-air over the middle of a purple worm tunnel that falls vertically for a hundred feet before leveling out. Will they be able to jump safely to the edge? - none of the three of them look like they would make good long jumpers Laughing

One of the things I liked about the first edition books was the black and white art... many was the player that used their own Monster Manual or Deities & Demigods as a coloring book.

the thing i didnt get right away was the purple worm.
dont know it seemed too "blend" to the earth, maybe because of the color

still, is a awesome work, and i hope to see more!

Yeah, by the time I used the space I needed for the "above ground" action, I didn't leave a ton of space for the purple worm, which is my bad.

And I'm not gonna lie...I don't know what a robilar is. Shocked

Hi all -
Because I don't visit the 2e forums much, I miss this stuff. I just happened to see my e-Friend Mystic-Scholar had made a recent post and thought I'd check it out.
But when I saw those first three pictures in your first post, I immediately thought of the Troubadour Presses 1979 Coloring Book. I read a few other posts that said almost the same thing. But this Lich King picture is a clear example of what the original coloring book was all about. Sure it was also an adventure, but just by looking at these pictures, you could write the adventure that goes along with them.
I had a player that drew like this - I have literally a "poster" that is seven 8.5" x 11" pages wide by five 8.5" x 11" pages long as a dungeon poster done in the original coloring book center page style. Unfortunately it is so big that I can't get it laminated (because I taped it all together and at one time had it on the wall - but now even with my own small library/game room I can't fit it on the wall or ceiling).
I would love to see even an unofficial coloring book put together of your artwork. With Mort's knowledge and weekly ability to come up with great WoG Comic stories I think he would be an awesome collaborator. Shyt, even Grodog or Rasgon would be ideal for getting you to draw in some well visualized (but hidden from most of us that only know GH half as well as them) GH concepts.
Hell, even add in a (few) GH iconic character(s) vs. classic 1e/2e monsters such as Beholders/Mind Flayers or a few other MM1 or Fiend Folio baddies and submit them for the Oerth Journal (although I know Rick's been out of it a bit).
How awesome would it be too see an early Mordikanien (maybe when he still had hair?) vs. those in the Fantastic Adventure? Or what about the Ghost Tower?
Without a doubt, I have to say that these pictures are some of the best that I've seen, by fans. These are well enough that posting this type of work on larger forums like EN World would/could garner a few paychecks. Two works of art that I had commissioned for GreyhawkOnline.com were done by VShane around 2002/3 and they cost me $25 each (http://www.greyhawkonline.com/artwork). If I had a job, I'd be willing to have you draw a few pictures for me.
With that said, I'd also be willing to host any pictures you'd like on GreyhawkOnline.com.

Awesome work. I will be following this thread much more closely, especially as I've now removed a Darth Vader picture from my smaller second monitor and put the Frost Giant Lich as it's background. I want to see more. More, More, MORE!

While I only had dealings, with regards to the L4 module, with doing the cover art for it, from what I gather, the module will be released sometime this fall and is around 96 or so pages.

And yeah, I think the module has been completed (as far as Len Lakofka writing it is concerned) for quite some time. The delay has come from the numerous editors/proofreaders who have started the project only to leave (for various reasons) the module to the "next guy." I think it finally landed into someone's hands over at DF that actually is seeing it through.

So, in short, the wait shouldn't be too much longer for L4: Devilspawn.

I'd even go so far to say that there is a marked level of improvement in this one. There's a lot of great character in the details, and it is my favorite of the bunch by far. Makes me want to write up an encounter for it right now. Very nice. Cool

Ding, ding, ding, ding....Tomb of Horrors it is.

I tried to capture a party that's just broke through the vines, and overhanging vegetation to reveal the actual corridor that leads into the tomb. I remember looking at the original module with it's illustration booklet back in the day and remembered how that illustration with the painted hallway with the curious brass box sticking out from it always peaked my interest.

I tried to stay true to the original Sutherland illustration of the corridor.

These are the original Trampier (not Sutherland as I originally stated...my bad) illustrations that came with the ToH's illustration booklet that I based my drawing on...

Another poster at another site stated it looked like the face from the demon statue on the PHB too. Trampier did paint the original PHB, so maybe he liked the image so much that he (in a round about way) included it on the wall mural of Acererak's tomb.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words.

I'm still learning the ropes with all of this acrylic painting stuff, but it's a fun learning process. I'm getting ready to tackle my biggest artistic endeavor ever with a 15" x 20" painting dealing with a party going up against some gnolls and an ogre in a ruins setting. If it turns out halfway decent, I'll post it when it's done.

I am always glad to see our local folks doing stuff that makes Canonfire look even better. This one looks a little bigger than some of your previous work. Is it on a different sized stock, or is it just that the number of subjects and the in-frame space comprises a larger area (i.e., a larger "room")?

Can't wait to see it when the paint starts hitting the canvas. Smile

Love the latest stuff, but you should shorten the length of your arrows by about 25%. When drawn to the cheek, the arrow head will only extend outwards an inch or two from the end of the bow. The archer in the painting is basically firing a javelin-sized arrow. Also, when arrows sink into targets they tend to really sink in quite deep, or even go through the target unless they hit something solid dead square. Watch a few deer hunting programs and you will see arrows fly completely through the deer's rib cage. Sounds crazy, but its true. Armor will slow penetration, and if the target has back armor it may even stop the arrow at that point, leaving the arrow embedded into the target as much as it can without exiting. I recommend shortening the shaft visible on the arrow stuck in the gnoll in the sketch by half.

Also, that sketch should make for an awesome painting. Cool
