The "Guide" to the '83 boxed set (page 17) provides some nice runes, as a "basic" set, that I enjoy incorporating into my Greyhawk. I also make an attempt to combine them, or create others with the provided set as a basis.
I think using them adds great flavor to the game and provides characters with a nice puzzle which needs to be worked out in order to "win" the game scenario.
