Bezoars, mad stones, pearls, etc...

After doing a bit of research about uncommon pearls (conch pearls, abalone pearls, cowry pearls), I find myself intrigued by bezoars, mad stones, hagstones, lithomancy, snake stones and the like. Has anything been done with these, in GH?

I may end up making a class (witch specialist?) that makes use of natural items like those above.

This just screams to be made into an adventure: Nine Pearls

That DEFINITELY needs to be an adventure hook! Wink

So, when are you going to write up a module for us? Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing

Haven't you learned yet, Scholar? Aeolius never actually writes anything. He just comes up with these ideas and tosses them to the rest of us out of spite. He's a game tease, man! Cool

Well, I can't deny the truth of those words. Evil Grin

Sorry, Aeolius, but the truth hurts . . . occasionally. Wink Happy

I guess that means that you and I will have to come up with something, Bubbagump. I know you're not doing anything at the present time. Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing

Ouch. ;) But...hey... guilty as charged. I did do that interview in Phoenix Lore, though.

I have rewritten my notes for what has become "Hagborn" at least three times. I like the current direction my brain is taking me, so perhaps we'll see that multi-part hag ecology yet.

Where's my queue... ah, yes...

Ecology of the Shellycoat
Ecology of the Midnight Hag
“Seas & Trees: Ecologies of the Woodhag, Salthag, and Greyhag
Necrology of the Spirit Hag
Ecology of the Krampus (my take on the krampus)
Ecology of the Stormhags

Hagstone dragons (coral, pearl, abalone)
Tsantsa: Shrunken Heads

reboots of Turucambi, The Sinking Isle, and the Jungle of Lost Ships from an undersea perspective.

“Nature of the Beast” as a viable d20/OGL campaign

My urban module series: Slipshod, Servant Unseen, Action/Reaction, “The King is a Fink!”, and Ooze Your Daddy?

But . . . Exclamation

Are you ever going to finish any of them? Hmmm? Confused

Nice Aeolius,
From the sounds of it either Mystic Scholar or Bubbagump will do your write up. I would say write up an npc of this class for postfest. Unfortunately your reputation seems to be contrary to what is needed.

Aeolius knows that we love him! Happy

Without him, none of us would know what type of sea life dwelt beneath the waves of Oerth's oceans! Shocked

Yep! He gives all of Oerth's aquatic life depth and dimension! Surprised Cool

Long live Aeolius! Happy Wink

As I was typing away in Greytalk, last night, it occurred to be that I had seen bezoars in D&D before. The 1e FF has sea urchins that contain "gems".

and I might as well add Dorodango to the list.

EDIT: and let's add carbuncles to the list...

Dorodango gems sound good! Happy

What about a Conkers gem, based on the seeds of horse-chestnut trees, like in the Dorodango article? Cool

You'll figure it out. Wink

Ewwwww....

The Pearl of Lao Tzu

Thusfar, I envision the Madstone Witch, using the trophy collector feat from PH2, metamagic components from UA, token spellbooks from Complete Arcane, and the leviathan hunter from Stormwrack... all mixed up together in a blender... Oerthblood and a certain 333 gems might play a role in there, somewhere.

A Madstone Witch is identified by her "third eye". Lodged in the center of her brow is a carbuncle of the highest quality coerced from the creature of the same name.

I knew that there was no way you could make such a find -- The Pearl of Lao Tzu -- and not find a way to use it in your game! Happy

But then, that's our Aeolius! Evil Grin

A local New Age store is hosting a gentleman performing cowry shell divinations, tomorrow. Do you think they'd be put off if I showed up to take notes? ;)

conchomancy: by shells
margaritomancy: by bouncing pearls
ichthyomancy: by fish behavior

Aeolius, does your Krampus ecology involve Black metal and Christmas parades? Is the Creature known as a Carbuncle, from the original Fiend Folio, still in 3rd edition?

My krampus was inspired by the krampus of Christmas time, but I added my own spin on things. As for the carbuncle, I think Tome of Horrors has that one.

And now... more pearls! This time from scallops:

Aeolius, you inspire me my friend. I'm going to find a way to use The Pearl of Lao Tzu, as well as your latest crop of scallop pearls, in my stories. They're just too good to pass up. Evil Grin

Thanks! Happy Cool

I am contemplating the creation of a demi-plane of Pearl. Every naturally-occurring pearl has an infinitesimal link to this plane - and a speck of power held within. Gathered in great numbers, pearls hold a magic of their own.

A demiplane of pearl? Actually that sounds kind of interesting.

Just make sure it doesn't come into contact with the plane of vinegar!

Oh, and check your PMs, Aeolius.

Maybe use the name- Brihat-Samhita ("The Great Compilation") for a tome or with the only know way to this plane ,maybe a quest to find a high-superior quality one of each .

Adding to the list is Yemengzhu, the Luminous Pearl
(also known as night-shining or moon-bright) lore

Though technically not a natural pearl, it's still inspirational.

I am tempted to do something unusual (I know.. I know... shocking) and make the sphere Phoebe, the "lost" moon of Oerth. I shall place it in the Sunless Sea, to light the surrounding waters. It is both revered and feared by lycanthropes.

Too flipping cool!

A fish trapped inside a shell, then entombed in a blister pearl. The basis for pearl money? Pearl magics? Or something new?

I never knew so many kinds of pearls existed. And, that blister pearl is just too cool. Smile
