The roster of the Citadel of Eight (and much of the rest of this article) seems almost word for word from the Living Greyhawk Journal #0. Serten had an intelligence of 7, according to The Rogues Gallery, which described him as "Quite simply, stupid but likable. He likes to adventure, but is basically not bright enough to be trusted on his own... he is too dumb to know when to run away, requiring the rest of the party to rescue him. He may not cast his spells for the cleverest of reasons either."

I really should read RG one of these days....
So refresh my memory because after all these years I'm still stumped. Serten died at Emridy likely because he was too stupidly-brave to run, but who was the Serten that was named for the wizard spell Spell Immunity?
p.s. 2000 posts. Woooooooo!

If you had asked Gary Gygax, he would've said it was the Serten who Ernie Gygax played, a cleric of St. Cuthbert. The character was dumb enough that he needed the wizards in the party to cast spells on him to give him a better chance at living. Based on this premise, Tenser probably created the spell, naming it for his friend Serten, who he had in mind when he created it.
However, there are a few references to an archmage Serten in canon. Prince Lakaster, described in Ivid the Undying, has a magic item called Serten's Ring: "Whether this ring truly belonged to that legendary archmage, who can say?" WGR1 also claims that Serten is a "powerful archmage." In my article on the Horned Society I postulated a "Serten the Elder," a relative and namesake of the cleric Serten who helped bind Zuggtmoy after Emridy Meadows. Dragon #82 describes a wizardly spellbook attributed to Serten, Arcane Resistance of Dwarves and Halflings.
Really, there's no need for an "archmage Serten" to exist. A more Gygaxian Greyhawk would probably just have Tenser create the spell (and spellbook). But if you want an archmage with the same name as the cleric who had belonged to the Citadel of Eight, there's some support for one.
Nice Sea Princes timeline, by the way. The only thing I see missing is the Sword of the Dragon/Vilharian, though that's kind of a secret history. You can read it in the background of the adventure "On the Town" in Treasures of Greyhawk. In it, Jeon II claims to be descended from one of the brothers of a king who lost a magic sword sacred to Kelanen. The king had started a foolish war, but was killed at the battle, the sword lost. One of his brothers came to the Hold of the Sea Princes to claim a name for himself, and Jeon II was his descendant. While Jeon gives the player characters false names in the adventure (not wanting to give away the greatest secrets of the House of Rhola to mere sellswords), in Sam's timeline you can see that the king was Tavish III, who died at the Siege of Westkeep. Living Greyhawk Journal #4 gives the story of the sword Vilharian, a magic sword sacred to Kelanen that belonged to the House of Rhola until it was lost by Tavish III at the siege of Westkeep. From Sam's timeline we see that the brother was Duke Luschan IV, who had been meant to rule Keoland but who, after faking his death, secretly organized the free captains of the south into the modern state of the Sea Princes. Jeon II is his descendant. Erik Mona confirmed the intended connection in this thread.

Serten and Ernie Gygax's other characters had an uncanny ability to make saving throws, so EGG added his name to the spell. Here's a thread.

Serten was so lucky with his saving throw rolls against magic that it almost seemed like he was immune to spells. Gary thought that adding Serten's name to a spell immunity spell would be an apropos situation to insert a homage to the character.

Unfortunately Serten's shortlived life ended with a finger of death to the chest where he missed his save. That might have something more to do with the fact, as that happened very ealrly in the original game. |
IMC, I use both the "legendary archmage" and the bumbling cleric.

Rasgon: Good insight on handling the Serten question. On the Sea Princes timeline, thanks! Yeah I knew there were Jeon references in ToGH but after mining Sam's timeline fatigue set in I guess :P
vestcoat: I should've known EGG had answered that question. Thanks for the link and quotes!

I'm beginning to suspect that you are trying to manipulate us into respecting Rose Estes' Greyhawk novels, Mortellan.
Stop it. I've made my saving throw versus your Suggestion.

You'll get your wish Xaris.
In the meantime here is a bump for Flint's fiction series on CF's frontpage. Kudos!

Sounds like your players are pretty decent role-players, Mortellan. Good for them to take daring risks for the sake of an epic adventure.
