I recently got the '83 WOG setting -- after having been relied on the '79 version for years.

Anyway, not that this is really important but has anyone else ever made anything of, or even noticed that the Land of Black Ice encounter table is --

01-15 Bugbears, Blue (same as normal bugbears)
16-00 Use Standard Encounter Tables

Blue Bugbears? Someone has to take a swipe at that.

I searched the articles and even CruelSummerLord made no mention of them in his masterful
On the Bugbears of the Flanaess: History, Culture and Nation.

Blue-nosed, I assume. Like hobgoblins. Maybe they have hobgoblin blood.

LG has featured an intriguing take on the blue-black color of the bugbears, and other critters.
It is more than just a bit of food-coloring. Cool

I suspect Philidor the munchkin, escapee from the Forgotten Realms has something to do with it.

{And yes I know about the construct, Pelor-Corellon BS reason for that stupid NPC.}

I was sure they were mentioned in the Greyhawk Adventures hardback, but all I found was a mention of "dark furred bugbears" in the writeup for Rigodurok. That may be what the blue bugbears are supposed to be.

I always assumed the blue referred to their fur colour.
I always imagined the predators in the land of black ice as being more on the extreme side (as in size and ferocity). The blue fur could of evolved as camouflage against such beasts...

Yes the blue bugbears of the Land of Black Ice had blue-black fur.

I think they, or equivalent blue ice goblins appeared in a recent Dungeon adventure aet in the Land of Black Ice. Look there for inspiration!
