Changes of State

This is a general question, but i have a specific example. The general question regards characters in a changed physical state, i.e. ethereal, invisible, incorporeal, etc. When such a change of state also effects their gear, what happens to said gear once the character casts it off or throws it away.

For example: Last night our mage, who is a wild psionist, went into ectoplasmic form. He wanted to then throw a vial of alchemist fire at a horde. The question was simple whether the vial would immediately return to physical state in time to break upon the foe at the end of the arc of the throw.

I am just guessing on this one, especially since I am not really a psionics 'specialist.' Since a psionicist's power stems from his/her mind, I'd think that the person could release the power on said item whenever he/she desired. So, in effect, YES. Just my gut feeling on that.

Take it to a more basic example then: A character and his gear becomes invisible. If he takes a coin from his pocket and places it on a table, does it become visible?

The description of Ectoplasmic Form in the 3.5 Expanded Psionics Handbook says "You also can't manipulate objects or activate items, even those carried along with you.", so no throwing ectoplasmic weapons. It's the psionic equivalent of Gaseous Form. Your body and gear transform into a uniform undifferentiated mass.

For invisibility:

3.5 Player's Handbook
"Items dropped or put down by an invisible creature become visible."

2e Player's Handbook:
"Items dropped or put down by the invisible creature become visible."

1e doesn't specify.

As Armitage shows, this isn't a general question. There is a big difference between a change in appearance and a change in state. Casting away an invisible object is entirely different from casting away an object in ectoplasmic form (which you cannot do).
