I'm looking at Keoland as a possible place to set my campaign. I looked here, read the Gold Box and the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer. However, Joseph Bloch said that Keoland is wide open for interpretation. The LGG describes the alignment of the place, but the Gold Box (Gary's work, mind you) doesn't really describe the place and leaves it to open interpretation.
I know a living campaign in the North East (Maine, New York, Massachusetts, etc.) is set in Keoland. I want to turn the nation into a place of adventure. Where my players can create characters and find adventure like Conan did. A good Swords and Sorcery setting within the Flanaess.
So, what do you think?
Yes I could set my campaign in Greyhawk and have that swords and sorcery vibe, but I want a place where I can make that my own.
Everything is open to interpretation.
Even when there are hard and fast statements about areas, they are still very limited and rather open.
As for Keoland, the Boxed set very much has alignments given for Keoland, along with its vassal regions.
As for Keoland being a sword and sorcery setting like Conan, you might want to recall that Aquilonia was very much an ancient realm that, despite some rather pernicious corruption, was very much a beacon of goodness in the Hyborian Age. It was the realms surrounding Aquilonia that were more openly unpleasant.
With that, one might note that the king of Keoland is a ranger, and in AD&D that means he must be of Good alignment. Turning him into someone who should be deposed by a barbarian seems a rather hefty subversion.
As far as those surrounding areas that are fit for Sword and Sorcery antics, the Pomarj could definitely use a Conan type to clean the place up.
The Sea Princes would benefit from having slavery eliminated.
The Amedio is a wonderful place for jungle explorations.
Ket is rather nasty and a different culture.
Together, they present precisely the sort of places Conan goes rampaging while intermittently relaxing in or protecting Aquilonia.

In addition to the areas that Samwise mentioned, I think the Bandit Kingdoms have that dangerous, can't-trust-anybody feeling that works for a Swords and Sorcery type game.
The Saltmarsh adventures are set in Keoland. Whether or not those can be played as sword and sorcery depends on their presentation by the DM, and what adventure elements the DM wants to emphasize.
