Best of Greyhawk, Volume 7

Originally posted to the old TSR message boards on AOL, these posts were compiled from Folder #7. All of the posts come from the second half of 1995, and represent a part of Online Greyhawk's history, as well as a source of inspiration and ideas.

The Compilation was edited by Nathan Irving.

Roger's Notes

Roger Moore, former designer for the World of Greyhawk, rambles on about a variety of topics. Included in these are the drow (both in the underdark and in space), Ginsel (the planet), and other Spelljammer topics.

Quasi-Deities of Greyhawk

Posts made by TSR Roger and Psychlops.

Roger Moore talks about the various names from 'Hawk lore that he feels should be made into Quasi-Deities. Once Mr. Moore became the guardian of the Greyhawk product line, he then made many of them Quasi-Deities, in The Adventure Begins and Player's Guide to Greyhawk.

The conversation then turns to the use of Quasi-Deities in a campaign, as well as speculation on the rules that would govern a Quasi-Deity as a character (with some parallels to the Zero-Level rules presented in the Greyhawk Adventures hardcover).

Naval Technology in Greyhawk

Attempting to tackle the infameous question of what level of technology exists in Greyhawk, Thane13 gives a detailed examination of the naval power of Oerth, with some rules for ships of the World of Greyhawk.

Beowulf the Bold Barbarian

A poem by MB Drapier.

Gem of the Flanaess: After the Great Fire

Written by QSamantha, this piece is an adaptation of the City of Greyhawk for use in her Greyhawk Renissance variant. It gives a short update on a number of NPC's, and what happened to them following the Great Fire, as well as detailing the changes to the actual city itself.

A must-read for anyone interested in using the prolific QSamantha's Renissance works.

Gem of the Flanaess: Monsters of the City

The monsters presented in the Greyhawk appendix to the Monstrous Compendium were, generally, lackluster and uninspiring (although nowhere near as bad as the living flying saucer which graced the Forgotten Realms appendix). In this piece, QSamantha examines some of MC5's critters for actual use in Greyhawk, with some notes and plot hooks which could prove invaluable to any DM looking to throw something different at their players.

Ehlonnic Mystery Cults

Taking a different view of the goddess Ehlonna and her cult, Chaos28 presents for us his version...a Mystery Cult. It tells of the history of the cult, it's myths, and it's role in the world today. Along the way, it also manages to slip in some plot hooks and potential adventure ideas.

Afterwards, a number of comments by Psychlops and Sabertore are addressed, and ideas expanded on by Chaos28.

Pantheons of the Flanaess

Note: This section is further broken down into a number of sections, each based on pantheon. It is a VERY large section, and a list of everyone who contributed to this section would be excessively long.

The first part of this section is quite short and deals with the gods of unknown origin. Little new information is given.

The next section deals with the pantheon of the Flan gods. Speculation on this particular subject includes the possibility that there are really two Flan pantheons (one primordial and wild, the other settled and pastoral). Naturally, some discussion as to the exact nature of the Flannish culture slips in, as well.

The third section deals with the Baklunish gods. It addresses the fact that there were (since this was written prior to the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer and even before Greyhawk 98 relaunch of the setting, both of which expanded the Bakluni pantheon slightly) only four Bakluni gods, and what this must mean.

The next section covers the Suel pantheon. It makes note of the highly civilized nature of the Suel gods, but also of the cruel nature of the Suel, as well as speculations that this might actually be one of the few complete pantheons that exist in Greyhawk, as presented in the post-Wars setting.

The fifth section of this piece covers the Oeridian gods. Having the largest number of gods mentioned in the printed materials, it is only fitting that the Oerid gods can reasonably be taken to present a complete or nearly-complete pantheon. Further parallels between the Oerid and Suel pantheon are noted. Other posters note the possibility of the Oerid pantheon undergoing a metamorphosis from something wild into something civilized.

The last section of this peice covers the Common gods. There is some speculation as to what exactly common means when talking of the gods of Greyhawk, as well as some brief ideas on pantheism in the Flanaess.

Dyvers, City of Adventure: Procan & Zilchus

Expanding on the two dominant faiths in Dyvers, QSamantha presents her writeups of these two Oerid gods, in the popular Faiths & Avatars format. A very useful pair of writeups to have, given the often spotty nature of the details given about the gods of Oerth in print in the past.

Al-Qadim: Expanding the Baklunish Pantheon

Posts by Aria13, QSamantha, Sabretore, and MB Drapier.

Expanding upon the conversations found in the Baklunish section of the Pantheons of the Flanaess collection, this piece, at first, focuses on the Al-Qadim gods as possible expansions of the Baklunish pantheon. It then drifts off into general discussion of the Baklunish lands, but is still quite helpful.
