Lake Superior - Spookily similar to the Nyr Dyv.

Now I know that EGG is grew up in Wisconson/Illinois and I know that he based a lot of the geography of the central Flanaess roughly on his surroundings (Boss Dahley of Stoink in Saga of Old City being a stand out example). Still - I never realised that he based the Nyr Dyv on Lake Superior.
Take it look for yourself - the similarities in shape are striking.

Has anyone thought about using some of the features of Superior to flesh out the Lake of Unnumbered Depths a bit?

The World of Greyhawk map was created specifically for publication. The actual map of Gary's home campaign prior to that was a remake of the American midwest.

So its hardly surprising that some of these survived into the published edtion.

That's still incredible. All this time I never gave it much thought. Mystara certainly seemed like a pseudo earth, but I never looked at GH for such similarities.

What Mort said. Wow. I never compared the two.

Having looked at it a second time, Duluth is Dyvers and Thunder Bay is Critwall. Too fun.

Looking at the LS map, perhaps an enterprising DM could use the existing islands as possible locations for the sunken Isles of Woe :D

Looking at the maps side-by-side is pretty amusing.
