Iuz the Evil says that Plague Fields gets its name from an evil artifact of Pyremius that is buried under a ruined keep in the area. Return to White Plume Mountain says that the town was deserted b/c of seepage from the Yellowflow River. The two explanations aren't mutually exclusive, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has tried to reconcile them.
The explanation of Plague Fields is not consistent in these two sources. The two locations can not be the same, as one is depopulated because of sulfuric salination and one was subject to a great curse. It is possible that the curse was lifted somehow, but I don't know when that would have been. I'm guessing that people are ignorant of the curse and assume the Plague Fielders left because of the bad water in the river.
That said, if the curse has not been lifted I'd think the water upriver of Plague Fields would be "drinkable," but that downriver would be diseased. Any thoughts on Plague Fields? If anyone has used the are I'd love to hear about it. Also, if anyone knows more about this "artifact of Pyremius"...
