I'm no Gord expert, but my campaign will be moving into Nyrond soon, so I'm mining the books for information. In the course of my research, I've stumbled across a few puzzlers. Perhaps a more learned scholar than I could shed some light for me.
Is Midmeadow part of Nyrond? I had assumed so, based on the borders Gary laid out in the Gazetteer. My confusion stems from the following passage in Saga of Old City:
Quote:
A sennight or so after embarking [from Midmeadow], they reached the carved stones marking the northernmost claim of King Archbold, third of that name to reign as sovereign over all Nyrond. Claims aside, the place was borderland at best, and both Gord and Evaleigh were glad for the security of mail-clad horsemen and foot soldiers...
If the caravan traveled a week south of Midmeadow, the Nyrondel border would be roughly even with the headwaters of the Franz, leaving Midmeadow as part of Urnst County (most likely), part of the Pale (less likely), or a free town (least likely). What am I missing?
Where would you place Castle Fizziak from "A Revel in Rel Mord"? Based on the description of the Fizziak lands, I think it must be three to four hexes east of the Duntide, between Beetu and Oldred.
Likewise, what of Grimalkinsham? Along the northern edge of the Gnatmarsh, southwest of Beetu, about one hex west of the Duntide?
If the caravan traveled a week south of Midmeadow . . .
Gord was escorting Evaleigh home, to Knurl and would be skirting the southern border of The Pale, heading to Knurl.
I need to consult my copy, but I believe it would be more appropriate to state: "If the caravan traveled a week southeast of Midmeadow . . ." rather than "due" south. It is possible that they had been passing through some contested territory. Without consulting my currently misplaced copy of the novel, I cannot say with certainty.
The caravan later passes through Theekham, turning due east toward Womtham. Regardless, based on my understanding of Nyrond's borders, I don't know how one could travel a week from Midmeadow in any direction before reaching "the northernmost claim of King Archbold" (unless going around in circles, which Gary presumably would have mentioned in the story). My reading of that passage is that Gary didn't intend Midmeadow to be part of Nyrond, but that seems to contradict every other source.

-Yeah, I mined the same source, looking for hints!
I just assumed that eityher:
1) Gord was misinformed as to Midmeadow's status, or;
2) Midemeadow was indepemdent in CY 578, put was annexed soon thereafter.
