Greyhawk the movie

If you were casting for an imaginary Greyhawk movie who would you cast in the role of prominent Greyhawk personalities?

Second, what locations would you shoot the film in?

Patrick Stuart as the bald Mordenkainen! heh

Nah, anyway...

Hopefully no Orlando Bloom playing Melf or some such.

Jude Law as Nerof.

Jauquin Pheonix as Drax

Liam Neeson as Rary

I would prefer a movie revolving around the Crook of Rao.

Mistaken

Don't get me wrong, the storyline could be anywhere or about anything.

Mordy should be played by Viggo Mortensen in his Aragon avatar
Rary by Gary Gygax

Chert by Schwartzneger

Nice thought, but is he not still rather young for Rary? The Traitor does "retain a youthful air seeming to place him in his mid fifties" (if I remember my "Denizens of the Bright Desert" correctly) but he is still very much the elder statesman. I would go for Christopher Lee myself (despite the fact that this would give people LotR flashbacks...)

As Rary is Baklunish - perhaps a Middle Eastern actor - like Ghassan Massoud, the guy who played Saladin in Kingdom of Heaven?

And Viggo Mortensen or Gabriel Byrne would make a good brooding Robilar.

Patrick Stewart as Mordy isn't bad - so long as he can get the whole "I'm craaaaazy!!!" intensity across. Christopher Eccleston with a shaved head can probably get the crazy Mordy eyes across better.

The Gubernator is too old for Chert, IMO. You need some one like the big dude who took the heavy crossbow bolt in the throat about 10 minutes into Kingdom of Heaven or Tyler Mane (Sabretooth from X-men) or - given he's a big D&D fan - Vin Diesel (fireball him early on in the movie so he can go bald for the rest).

And Jude Law is too young to be Nerof Gasgal, just as Joaquin is to be Drax. Both Nerof and Drax are older gentlemen with a lot more gravitas than that pair of actors can muster.

If restrained from his D&D movie frothing, Jeremy Irons could pull off Drax. Or maybe Ciaran Hinds (Caesar from "Rome").

Nerof needs someone cunning and wily looking - can't think of anyone just at the moment (and they need to be older than Sean Bean).

Sean Bean would be a good Rakehell Chert though

Joaquin would be a perfect Prince Strychan. He's got the decadence and underlying menace down to a tee.

A shaven headed Brian Cox would be a shoe in for Grenell.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers might be a good Xavener - he's got pretty boy looks, charisma and a strong undertow of menace.

Jeremy Irons as Mordy.

Al Pacino or Gary Oldman as Nerof.

Jack Nicholson as Iuz.

Robin Williams as Zagyg.

Angelina Jolie as Jallarzi? (I don't care, as long as she's in the movie!)

And not to typecast, but Johnny Depp as an evil Rhennee pirate would be fun.

I am not sure that that works visually. She would make a good Iggwilv, though.

That would be Jouko Ahola, a finnish bodybuilder winner of World's Strongest Man in 1997 & 1999. I would not exactly call him a greatest thespian of the world though (though there are worse out there). He was occasionally quite decent in Herzog's 'Invincible' and unbearable in other times. Being paired against likes of Tim Roth does not help either Happy

But I agree that Ghassan Massoud would be awesome Rary. After all, LGJ mentions he is over 70 so he would look the part quite well.

Sean Bean would have to be in it but instead of Chert he should play Jian Destron.

I think Ian McNeice (who played the Newsreader in "Rome" and Vladmir Harkonnen in the two Dune mini-series) would make an excellent Otto, at least for the first five minutes of the movie before he gets blown to bits at the signing of the Pact of Greyhawk...

Are you mixing up Otto and Otiluke?
Otto is the portly Almorian archmage with a love of music.
Otiluke is the crispy critter from the Day of the Great Signing who isn't Tenser. :)

If the movie is made tomorrow, it would include the 'flavor actors' of the last few years. Just look to the Oscars. That's how Hollywood works. They would also cast against race to be all inclusive. So here is my 'Hollywood cast'

Mordenkainen: Heath Ledger
Rary: Morgan Freeman
Jallarzi: Kiera Knightley
Iggwilv: Rachel Wiesz
Nerof: Paul Giamatti
Zagyg: Johnny Depp
Robilar: Jamie Foxx
Iuz: Joaquin Phoenix

Wracking your brain for personalities

When I started this thread, I assumed most people are more knowledable of the personalities that abound in the Flanness. Then I came across this monster thread (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~monax002/Council/resources/persons/persons.html) and feel free to steal from it to learn who might be who use the IMDB database.

Also, if we were to recast Red Sonia today...who would she be?

Nothing like bit of ethnic miscasting. Some may remember an old TV film where Louis Gosset was cast as Anwar Sadat Laughing

No no no, you have it all wrong. Why go for such a bad casting when we have an actor who is of proper age, tall, has clear Suel heritage and is a skilled martial artist as well.

There is only one choice to play Father of Obedience: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000185/
