Okay, I've read through the LGG's description of the Human races for the fourth time, and I still can't seem to get a handle on how they should be played. I'm probably trying to apply "Earthly" cultures to them, and I keep getting the feeling that I should be reading between the lines, but I don't "get it".
The Olman seem to be roughly based on native Central Americans.
The Rhenee are pretty much a Romani (gypsy) culture, more stereotypical than actual.
The Suel remind me of White Russians (the people, not the Dude's favorite drink), with some cruelty mixed in for fun.
Other than that, I'm at a loss. My color wheel apparently has a flat, so I can't tell "olive" from "tan".
What is your take on the racial goulash that is Oerth?
As an FYI, there is nothing unusually white about White Russians. The term has a political origin, and has nothing to do with the characteristics of the people.
I’ve always equated the Suel to the Aryans based on their racial characteristics, aggressive migrations, and the barbarian/Viking offshoots.
Interestingly, there are theories that both the Aryans and Romany migrated to Europe from India.
The Baklunish seem obviously Arab/Turk inspired.
I think of the Flan as Indians, both the Native American sort (Rovers of the Barrens) and the sort from India (Tenh).
The Oeridians are tough to pin down, Celts maybe.
Scott
Scott nailed that one. And as for the Oeridians, I have no idea either. I think there is even mention somewhere that it is hard to identify them as they are one of the most diverse appearing of the human races.
Thanks for the reply. I used White Russians, as "Caucasian" is too easy to misinterpret, and I don't know any more specific descriptives.
Once I had the Middle-East concept in mind, the Baklunish description "clicks". Funny how I couldn't see it before. Hm.
I can almost equate Flan to Celt, especially the nature-worship aspect. But Oeridians' warlike nature seems to fit the bill even better (especially when you consider the clothing). I'm not sure about the hierarchical nature of the race. Maybe Prussian?
I guess my Earthly prejudices are keeping me from seeing them "as they are".
The Baklunish always seemed Persian/Arabian to me, especially under 1st edition. The move towards Turkish/Arabic is a more recent thing - especially since the introduction of Al'Akbar as a Baklunish Dieity.

Perhaps Al'Akbar's ascendancy mingled with the migrations are exactly why there is a shift. The original Baklunish Empire could have been substantially different than the modern West.

Perhaps the Oeridians are diverse enough to be further subclassed by region, especially if one speculates that they appear elsewhere on Oerth.
