    The Suel Pantheon: Lydia

Priests of Lydia(Goddess of Music, Knowledge, Daylight)

AL: any good, RA: white robes with silver and gold trim, SY: a spray of vivid colors, AR: any, no shields Wpn: club, dagger, mace, morning star, spear, staff; SPH: all, charm, creation, divination, guardian, healing, necromantic, protection (minor), sun, thought, Spl: none, Add: none.

Priests of Lydia are musicians, sages, and scholars, using the magic and skills for the betterment of all good folk. Most of Lydia’s clergy are female (80%). Even the lowliest priests of Lydia are granted additional knowledge in the form of spell-like powers. These powers and the levels they are gained at are as follows:

    Level/Granted Power
1-3: detect magic 1/day, access to 1st level spells of the illusion/phantasm school
4-5: augury 1/day, access to 2nd level spells of the illusion/phantasm school
6-7: divination 1/day, access to 3rd level spells of the illusion/phantasm school
    8-11: locate object 1/day
    12+: commune 1/day

These powers are cast at a level equivalent to that of the priest. Lydia grants her priests spells of the illusion/phantasm school of magic when they have achieved certain ranks within her church. These spells are treated as cleric spells for all intents and purposes, and are simply added to the priest’s list of spells that may be prayed for. Priests of Lydia can turn undead.

A commune spell cast by a neutral good priest of Lydia is special and powerful; only three questions are allowed, but if she is addressed directly, Lydia herself will answer the questions fully and willingly. It is of note that these questions are not limited to simple “yes” or “no” questions, but to any question that would probably take less than two minutes to answer. Lydia prefers not to be communed with in this manner more often than once per week. Abusers of this special boon may not be given complete answers, or will be given no answer at all. If this privilege is abused to the extreme, such as by asking repeated questions day after day about the same subject, Lydia may reduce the offender to 1st level of experience and expel them from her clergy. Clerics of Lydia may also use their commune spells in the above fashion. Any of Lydia’s clergy may also make use of the commune spell in the normal manner, asking one “yes” or “no” question per level of the caster, though these question are usually handled by Lydia’s minions and not by here personally. Worshipers of Lydia’s who have done here a great service are sometimes given the benefits of one of her special commune spells as a reward.

Lydia has few churches in the Flanaess, except for six that are notable. These are located in Lo Reltarma, Niole Dra, Gryrax, Nellix, Pitchfield, and Leukish.

What's the reasoning behind granting Lydians Illusion/Phantasm spells?

Personally, I'd probably replace that with divination spells, but I'm open to hearing why you went that route.

Also, had you considered giving these priests something similar to the Bardic Knowledge/Legend Lore ability, to reflect both Lydia's music and knowledge aspects?

    Otherwise, looks good Smile

    Good call chatdemon.

This entry was based in large part upon the 1e Dragon magazine write-up for Lydia. That being said, when I had allocated spheres to Lydians, they seemed very light compared to most of the other deities. Not many other spheres fit her very well. Seeing as Lydia is mentioned as being able to cast a limited numbber of magic-user/illusionist spells each day, I added this to the priest profile. I also was considering the original 1e illusionist spell list which contained not only illusion/phantasm spells but also spells that pierced such magics, namely dispel illusion and others, which would be usefful in finding out information. I am not sure why I chose to ignore Lydia's bardic apsect, though I suspect it was so as not to make priests of Lydia too different from the base cleric class. That was then though. I am much more willing to fiddle with things now. Happy

In hindsight, it would be better to change the illusion/phantasm access to something else. To be more fitting with Lydia's bardic and divinatory aspects, I recommend the following changes:

*Remove access to the illusion/phantasm school spells. The spells to pierce illusions are now a part of the Greater Divination school in 2e anyways, or are part of the All sphere.

    Add/alter the following features:

*AR: chainmail and less, no shields.

*At 1st level, priests of Lydia gain a bonus non-weapon proficiency in Musical Instrument(player's choice).

*Bardic Music; A priest of Lydia can use entertainment/music to influence reactions, inspire courage, or sing a countersong, just like a bard can (see Players Handbook p. 42-43).

*Bardic lore: A priest of Lyida has a 5% chance per level of knowing the general purpose and history of any magical item. The priest need not handle the item, but must examine it closely.

*Priests of Lydia may use any wizard spell of the Greater Divination school as a priest spell of equal level.

I think this would go a long way to making priests of Lydia a bit more unique, and a bit more representative of their deity's apect and influences.

Here is what the altered entry should look like Happy :

Priests of Lydia(Goddess of Music, Knowledge, Daylight)

AL: any good, RA: white robes with silver and gold trim, SY: a spray of vivid colors, AR: chainmail and less, no shields Wpn: club, dagger, mace, morning star, spear, staff; SPH: all, charm, creation, divination, guardian, healing, necromantic, protection (minor), sun, thought, Spl: none, Add: see below*.

They also have a 5% chance per level of knowing the general purpose and history of any magical item. The priest need not handle the item, but must examine it closely. These abilities function exactly the same as those of a bard(see Players Handbook, p. 42-43).

Priests of Lydia may pray for the use of any wizard spell of the Greater Divination school as a priest spell of equal level. Even the lowliest priests of Lydia are granted additional knowledge in the form of spell-like powers. These powers and the levels they are gained at are as follows:
