    Clerical Prayers to the Gods of Greyhawk

    To add some more roleplaying to my campaign I like to add "sayings" "Prayers" "Motto's" "Battle cry's" etc etc

    Rao has a huge church in Verbobonc called "Monestary of the Reverent Brothers" and In my campaign the players will follow a priestess there to get a mission. But I am trying to determine what a big church ritual would looks like and what a big prayer would sound like. I am trying to do this for each of the main gods.

    Rao, The Mediator, the Calm God, LG greater god of Peace, Reason, and Serenity

    Quote:
    Temples of Rao are generally stately, open air affairs filled with incense, quiet chanting, and earnest philosophical discussion. Many have extensive libraries and learned sages on hand to answer even the most esoteric question.

    Here is a prayer I made up.

    Reason is the greatest gift. It leads to discourse, which leads to peace, which leads to serenity. If all could be convinced to reason with each other, the world would enjoy the harmony of benign order. Some refuse to use reason and instead resort to violence, at which time action—governed by reason and wisdom—is required to counteract their deeds and restore peace.

    The soul of man is divided into three parts, intelligence, reason, and passion. Intelligence and passion are possessed by other animals, but reason by man alone.

    Most people who lack peace simply have not taken the time to pursue it. Rao's peace comes to those with the personal discipline to stop in the midst of the maelstrom of life and take time to seek Rao. He commands, "Be still, and know that I am Rao". And to those whose minds are steadfastly fixed on Rao, he gives the gift of peace.

    Prayer St. Cuthbert

    This one I stole from the movie Pulp Fiction which is a perfect match for a vengeful cleric of St Cuthbert laying down to lay and exacting punishment before killing the bad guy. Like a Bandit or something.

    Quote:
    What do I look like!
    (bandit)..what..
    What land are you from?!
    (bandit)..what..
    "What" is no land that I have heard of!
    Do they speak common in "What"?
    (bandit)..what..
    Common, you fool, do you speak it?!
    (bandit)..yes...
    Then you know what I am saying.
    Describe what I look like?!
    (bandit)..what..
    Say what again! Say what one more time, I dare you!
    Say what one more damn time!
    (bandit)..you look like a...priest....
    go on!
    (bandit)...cleric of St. Cuthbert?
    Do I look like a peasant?!
    (bandit)..what..
    Do..I..LOOK..LIKE...A...PEASANT?!
    (bandit)...No!!!!..
    Then why are you talking to me like a peasant.
    (bandit)...No...nooo.
    Yes you did. YES YOU DID!
    And I do not appreciate your attitude.
    Do you know your scriptures? My favorite is Cuthberine 35:17

    ***quietly****
    The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

    Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost souls.

    ***Louder***
    And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.

    ***screaming**
    And you will know my name is St. Cuthburt when I lay my vengeance upon thee.[/i]

    A Prayer to Lolth

    (The Priestess speaks)

    She is Evil and huge and beautiful! She is our mother!

    She is lustful and lewd! - Spider Queen; we have none other!

    In the day she was hidden from us, but we found her moaning in the
    shade.

    We shudder and give her our will in the darkness; we are afraid.

    (The Drow reply)

    She sends us pain,
    and we bow before her;

    She smiled again
    and bade us adore her;

    She solaced our woe
    and soothed our sighing;

    And what shall we do
    Without her guidence?

    (The Priestess speaks)

    She is hungry and eats our children; - how shall we feed her?

    She takes our young males and our maidens; - ours to obey her!

    We are loathed and feared and reviled of all Elvenkind; that is our pride.

    She feeds us, protects us, loves us, and kills us; no longer shall we
    hide.

    (The Drow reply)

    Death is strong;
    But Lolth is stronger.

    Time rules long;
    But She rules longer.

    She solaced our woe
    and soothed our sighing;

    And what shall we do
    Without her guidence?

    A Prayer to Hextor

    This is an inscription found on the barrow of an ancient Oeridian War-Chief. It is still used today to honor fallen worshippers of Hextor who have achieved greatness in Hextor's cause.

    "My days have run, A servant I
    Worshipper, of mighty Hextor;
    Student of war and battle, Hextor's lore;
    I have called his battle-cry;
    Fulfilled his red and bleeding feast;
    Held my enemies heart within the flame;
    I am set free and named by name
    Honored by the War-God's priests."

    Thanks Jason, I now have 2 For Hextor...

    Beware your fears made into light.
    Let those who try to stop what's right
    Burn like his power, Hextor's might!"

    The deity listings in Living Greyhawk Gazeteer have what amount to prayers in the description.

    "Sainted one, let not these evil hounds give voice, let not their warning cries be heard, I ask of thee for calm, for blessed silence, now."

    This was a prayer to Saint Cuthbert when casting a silence spell

    Has anyone else pegged that as the SInestro Corps variant of the Green Lantern Oath?

    Not that it's a bad thing, mind you.
    I can totally imagine Sinestro as an interesting analog of Hextor.
    Especially the principles of that Corps.

    From my old Nerull writeup:

    Forsaken dead
    Stay in your tombs
    Forsaken dead
    Stay in your Crypt
    Nerull shall bind thee

    "Oh pure of heart and strong of arm, bless those gathered here to fight the spirit of evil which comes upon us."

    "Sainted one, you have blessed us all, protect this warrior with special care, he has fought the evil sent forth against us, your strength has touched him, let your spirit protect him!"
