Why Leomund left the Circle of Eight (a theory)

While browsing through the PHB last night, looking at some of the "named" spells, I realized that Leomund's schtick is mostly creating "boxes," whether for items or people (he's more versatile than Bigby, at least).

Mordenkainen, however, has attached his name to a wide range of spells.

Ergo, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed that Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion is just a ramped-up version of Leomund's Secure Shelter, all the way down to the unseen servant effects.

My theory is that Leo was working on a better version, but Mordy plagiarized his research and published the spell as his own in Spell Research Quarterly, thus leading to Leo breaking from Mordy's pet project, the Circle of Eight.

Everyone knows Mordenkainen's a bastard, even more than I am.

I like this theory, Robbastard.

It fits with my image of Mordenkainen as a self-centered, neutrally-aligned egotist and also with the time-honored tradition of wizards keeping their spells close to their chests, only trading with other wizards when they really needed new spells.

Leomund may have left because Mordenkainen is just not nice.

Leomund: "Hey Mordenkainen! I created an awesome new spell! It's called Leomund's Secure Shelter! It's an even better version of my tiny hut spell! Pretty cool, huh?"

Mordenkainen: How...quaint. I'll just put it right here on the refrigerator, with a gold star."

Eight weeks later...

Mordenkainen: "Leomund. Attend me. I have created a new spell. It is called Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion."

Leomund: "You're just a giant jerk always, aren't you. I'm done with the Circle. I'll send for my things."

There's a 4-panel Mortellan comic for you! Laughing

This reminded me of that scene in Amadeus where Mozart effortlessly improved Saleri's composition that he worked so hard on.
