    Editions change, but discussion around ID endures!

    If I understand the rules correctly, material components are only used up if the spell description states as much. (And no use of a spell focus if the component has a cost, a la a 100gp pearl) Identify does not state that the spell consumes the pearl. So a caster only has to buy/acquire the pearl once? The pearl was consumed in prior editions & for some reason this very minor issue has me constantly re-reading the same few paragraphs.

    Your reading is correct. The caster needs a 100-gp pearl (and a feather or substitute focus) to cast identify, but it’s not consumed in casting.
