working toward Greyhawk & the points of light concept

I am currently returning my Flanaess to well before the twin cataclysms ready to accommodate the points of light concept and 4th edition then I'll take it from there.

I cannot see how the points of light concept can stand the test of time as it is the nature of the beast that the strongest races will expand and dominate their surrounding areas and thus become civilised nations. If this does not happen the race ends up getting wiped out or worse being dominated.

To that end, my campaign will be structured to develop from past (pre migrations) to current day (after the wars). From this I can build many campaign arcs over a long period of time. Yes alright I may have to change some things due to different races etc but the basics are there and with a bit of work it’s achievable. The possibilities are endless.

In a way I'm quite excited.

I will make Greyhawk work with whatever edition I settle on. But I will give 4th edition a try.

You are not alone. We smacked this topic around quite a bit on this thread here:

One of the important ties that makes or breaks alliances in Greyhawk is the idea of trade between nations. How can such trade exist in a points of light campaign. It is true that in the early days the Free City of Greyhawk gained in size and prestige due to adventurers seeking their fortunes, but present day Greyhawk relies primarily on trade. In my opinion present day Greyhawk could not survive in a points of light world.

It will be interesting to see how the Free City of Greyhawk evolves in your campaign. I think it may end up having a completely different feel.
