I know that the demihumans can be found through out the Flaness, but also know there are places they congregate ie the elves have celene sp?
Where are the Dwarves, gnomes and halflings?
Halflings are a puzzling bunch. It's given that "they prefer to dwell in stable nations ruled by stronger folk," so it looks like there are no halfling states. The LGG says under the description of halflings that they are currently found in "much of the Flanaess, but still favor the central and western regions from the Urnst states to the three Uleks."
That's all well and good until you look at population figures. In the Bone March they make up 18% of the pop. Okay, we could conclude they are probably subjects of the Gnome King of the Flinty Hills. Either that or there are an unusually large number of halfling slaves or evil halflings living amongst the humanoids of the Bone March. What doesn't make any sense is Blackmoor, where halflings again make up 18% of the pop. Maybe nomadic halfling tribes living in the parts of the Burneal Forest claimed by the Archbaron? Eskimo halflings?
A number of places have halflings making up 9-10% of the population. Some of these fit in the racial description but there are a few anomalies, like the Valley of the Mage, with 10%, Tenh, Ahlissa, the Sea Barons, Solnor Compact, and Yeomanry, all with 9%. As far as where they "should be" based on the description, the largest numbers seem to be in the Principality of Ulek with 10%, and the Urnsts, Greyhawk, and Shield Lands, with 9% each.
In the 6-8% range we have the Sea Princes with 8%. Rovers with 7%. Ratik, the Snow Barbarians, Perrenland, Dyvers, Sterich, County of Ulek, and Tusmit, all with 6%.
I read in a Dragon article once that halflings tended to mimic the society of the larger peoples around them, and that there were cases of halfling tribes living in orc territories becoming evil war mongering raiders. I used this in an adventure one time, the characters getting swarmed by evil cannibalistic hobbits serving Iuz. Puts a new spin "second breakfast".
Doesn't the third Ulek state (not the elven one not the dwarven one) have a large demihuman poulation?
