Oh well yeah I guess you did. Somehow I got latched on the predicted third round matchup titles not individual results. Be ready for some more bold predictions then.

    Can Vote Multiple Times

    Hi all -
I totally didn't realize that with Mort's new voting scheme that you could vote multiple times. As such, Pholtus should be back, because I woulda voted like a BAZILLION times.
So, again, this is all a sham. PHOLTUS WINS.

Damn, that little tart bytch is still alive in the tournament.

It didn't even occur to me to vote multiple times. Cuz that would be dishonest, right? (maybe Good is a little dumb, at that, she suggests self-deprecatingly.) And a victory by cheating would be a hollow victory indeed...unless the god is evil, I guess. Then they might like a victory by cheating even better...

This has been a fun event, Mort! Thanks for hosting it. I think it would be cool if we continued to have the occasional event 'round these parts, to drum up a little excitement every now and then.

    Good vs. Good

    Hi all -
Voting multiple times equates to evil? No way, sister...we're in a contest for the GREATEST GOD OF GREYHAWK....it's either vote your way out of a paper bag or get the car door slammed against your head multiple times.

Had I noted the multiple votes earlier, I would have voted a bazillion times for Pholtus and Vecna, and not told anybody so that then Pholtus could beat Vecna out in the end. Thus the rest of this contest is a sham. Although, I do hope Mr. Xagyg wins, after all, his patron did vote for him, and well he was Governor of Greyhawk City and imprisoned nine gods (but not Pholtus). Xagyg vs Nerull is how I have the final count coming down.

    Be Well. Be Well Hard-Headed.

Ah Theocrat, you wiley character you. The fact is I had to sign up for a new (free) account to handle the entry load for the next two rounds of the tourney. When I did I forgot to set the form to one vote per IP number. As such tonight I had to sign up for -another- free account to get us through this round and we'll see about the last. I'd be fine with open voting but the site only allows me so many entries per account per month. Not enough for one week contests if you ask me.

I honestly don't care that much who wins at this point, all my favorites have already been voted off the island. I voted for Wee Jas because she showed some skin. ;)

And I feel like "riding with the Theocrat" should be a euphemism for something, but I haven't figured out what that something is yet.

If you noticed my "signature," you'll know that my favorite has been voted off too.

And its a western euphemism Talin. It refers to being on horseback and riding the range together as friends, through thick and thin. Jesse James and Cole Younger "rode together."

And I believe that you were dishonest and are well aware of your Brokeback Mountain analogy. That was both ugly and completely uncalled for. And has no place on CF.

I give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but you've certainly gone down a couple of notches in my esteem with your -- as I perceive it -- unprovoked verbal attack.

    Shocked

    Confused

    ...

...um, what? I was making a light-hearted comment of a very general nature (still haven't even seen Brokeback Mountain, btw); what you read into it is your deal, not mine. Not really feeling as though I'm benefiting from your doubt over here.

For the record, I was thinking "riding with the Theocrat" might make the most sense in a phrase like, "Weep not for him, Martha; he rides with the Theocrat now," or something in that vein. (Not like I think Theocrat = Death either, I just thought it sounded funny.) It is always of course my great hope that someone else will find an amusing innuendo to read into something, which I freely admit. Smile No attack on ANYONE, though. I will attack to defend myself, if necessary, but (forum?)wars of aggression aren't really my scene.

Thank you Talin. I freely and sincerely offer my apologies for my misunderstanding. Embarassed

My euphemism steams from Saturday morning westerns. And I haven't seen -- and don't intend to see -- Brokeback Mountain either. Wink

Again, I thank you for your clarification and apologize for any affront I may have given. Embarassed

Nice analogy by the way. Cool

    Aw, man!

I wish I'd been back to W.O.G. to see this contest going on sooner! Well, congrats, Mort, you made something interesting enough happen to get me to come back and post on Canonfire again!

This got me to thinking about which is my favorite Greyhawk god and I was surprised to find I not only can't choose one -- I can't narrow my list below 15!

Scottenkainen (and others), which gods are your favorites? 15 seems like a pretty long list, but to each his own, I s'pose. If this would be considered thread derailment, I can start one up elsewhere, but, you know, since we're all here and thinking about GH gods, it seems as good a place as any.

Mine are, in no particular order: Olidammara, Rudd, Lirr, Lydia, Fharlanghn, Mhyriss, Zodal. These are the deities I would worship, were I native/transported to Oerth. I also like Hextor and Heironeous (and I totally dig the heretical sect that worships them both), and have recently become a bit of a fan of Vecna. Hextor and Heironeous are fun because under certain circumstances, one could count a Hextor-worshipper as an ally; under others, a Heironean could be a terrifying foe. I've never been in a game which featured Pholtus, but I'm sure he and his clergy could also fill an interesting ally/antagonist role. I never gave much heed to Vecna before, but after my experiences in the Age of Worms campaign, I have come to understand the destructive power of secrets. Thanks, Darl Quethos, you Magnificent Bastard you.

Hey Scott! Glad to see I have sparked your Greyhawk thinking muscles. 15 eh? Yeah I think I'd have a hard time choosing a definitive favorite too. My choices as it is are divided between comic appeal and game appeal. Thinking back, I have a bias for certain gods in the comic for various reasons(like they are easy to draw or make fun of) but there are many that I've never used or maybe just once. And half of those I'm sure I've never even touched in a game situation! Sometimes I get tired of certain deities in comic and game. I used to do alot of comic with Vecna and before that he was also in my games alot in 2e, now I hardly use him in either. Then there is Iuz, who I do like, but I overused him so much in my campaigns that it led to his general exlusion in the comic from the very start.
I think overall I like the neutral deities more than evil or good, and possibly good the least. And further muddling the choices If I were like Talin and had to actually worship one, I'd love to revere one of the quasi-deities before most full gods. Who wouldn't want to be a swordsman of Kelanen or a gun toting paladin of Murlynd?
Now if I could BE a greyhawk deity that's easy. I'd be Norebo. ;)

    My list

Beory, Pelor, Rao, Zilchus, Cyndor, Wee Jas, Celestian, Delleb, Ehlonna, Fharlaghn, Gesthai, Heironeous, Hextor, Pholtus, and Zagyg -- and I didn't even think about quasi-deities! As for why those, I'm saving that for a blog entry.

It should be pointed out that Lendor was showing more skin than Wee Jas, but in the end that was not enough.

What GH diety would I actually worship? Hmm...

Cyndor, that's a rare choice. Why him if I may ask?

Because Cyndor was the intermediate deity before there was an intermediate deity category. Because he's an enigma that doesn't fit in with any pantheon. He's the outsider with all the answers that only time can reveal. If the Crisis of Infinite Earths ever came to Greyhawk, Cyndor would be Monitor.

The Monitor, intriguing correlation. And by that line of reasoning if he were in Marvel, I'd say Cyndor is Uatu the Watcher.

Then again I like to use him as Mr. Peabody.

I like the inclusion of the FR stuff. I think a Goddess of Dreams will need to be found among the Elven Pantheon. But that's just my opinion. Cool

Seriously, though, I can see Wee Jas as the winner.

I dunno about Ravenloft, though... given that it seems that Ravenloft is more-or-less a realm that's like "The Village" from the old "Prisoner" TV series, but for the baddest of the bad (Strahd, Lord Soth [expecting flak for mentioning...], etc. ...) and there seems tro be a structured reason for its existence, I don't see a totally random and chaotic god like Tharizdun creating that.

Tharizdun isn't totally random and chaotic. He's neutral evil. The idea that his dreams might subconsciously pull other evil beings toward him and torment good ones doesn't sound too far off.

As for the good goddess of dreams, I've mentioned it before in chat (though I think Mystic was the only one awake). I direct you to Sehanine Moonbow. Humans could worship her under the name Celene, personifying the aquamarine moon. Ehlonna, of course, takes care of Luna in her Artemis-like aspect, with her unicorn horn and bow representing a silver lunar crescent.

Gah, yeah should've figured it would come down to a demihuman. Celene-Sehanine is good. I still don't understand how Sehanine infiltrated GH in the first place. Isn't she a FR creation?

From WoG273b, referring to the runes on the Bronze Doors in the Temple of Elemental Evil -

"6. I haven't taken the time to translate the runes on the Bronze Doors, but I'd be keen to hear from anyone who has done so."

Here's what I worked out. Some runes appear different in different sources and I've noted these.

    Line 1 - Regeneration / Holy (’80 WoG Gazetteer) / Warning
Line 2 - Good (’80 WoG Gazetteer) or Demoniac (’83 WoG Guide) This rune is most likely Good rather than Demoniac, since the others conform to the runes given in the '80 WoG Gazetteer.
    Line 3 - Private / Thrall, Prisoner / Fire? (’80 WoG Gazetteer) / Sulfur, Infernal / Key
    Line 4 - Death
    Line 5 - Opposition, Opposed / Demoniac (’80 WoG Gazetteer) / Evil / Evil
    Line 6 - Possession
    Line 7 - Danger, Deadly / Darkness / Insanity / Insanity / Insanity (’80 WoG Gazetteer) / Earth (’80 WoG Gazetteer)
Line 8 - Unknown (appears as an ankh) / Warning / Holy (’80 WoG Gazetteer)

First, I never knew that Boccob was bald! Shocked

Second, I guess I'll have to check out Ghost Tower, since I never actually got to play it. Wink

Another excellent job, Mort! I just love your work and appreciate your wonderful efforts on behalf of us all, but especially on behalf of the continued life of Greyhawk. Cool Happy

Hilarious! And I thought I was the only person in the world who remembered the quazar dragon.

(Incidentally, I have actually used the quazar dragon in my game, as a means of getting rid of a certain annoying rules lawyer. And I ran the accompanying "Nogard" adventure for him once, too, since it didn't work!)

(Also without looking it up but) I would think that detect invisible would show things that were naturally difficult to see, even if not using magic.

For example, I am currently reading return to the tomb of horrors, and it mentions that the vampires in gaseous form in the fog may be seen with a detect invisible, even though they are not actually invisible. Gaseous form is an "innate ability" and would not be detectable as magic, I suppose.

"A thief slinging a gem from the crypt will cause 1 damage per 10,000gp value, shattering the gem in the process. (Oh that Gygax is a sly DM)"

Too sly for my tastes in this case, which is my overall impression of both 1E and 2E Tomb of Horrors.

It is great that the gems can damage him, but how are the PC's supposed to know this? To me, it is not the mark of a "superior player" that they can use a strategy for which there is no in-game reason supplied - it just means they used out-of-game knowledge...

Just to correct the following in the comments, Mort:

"The Warden of course the crashed space ship from Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. It is an homage to the lost colony ship from the fantastic scifi RPG Metamorphosis Alpha by James Ward. "

The ship in S3 is NOT the Warden, according to an interview with Gygax in Oerth Journal #12 (pages 8-9). Jim Ward says the same thing here: http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11179&start=502

Well hell. I'd settle for even a portion of the Warden, since the ship in Meta Alpha is rather humongous in scale(More fitting for Arneson's City of the Gods IMO). It would be ridiculous to say they aren't related at all however, cause I'd call shenanigans for such hindsight 30 years after the fact.

Speculation on the identity of the two cultists

So, mort, do we have enough clues now to figure out who the cultists of Tharizdun are, or should we wait for more comics to come out? :-)

Aren't they just human cultists in ceremonial robes? If they turned out to be Erythnul and Incabulos in disguises, it would be very weird.

Last night in the chat, mort hinted at a puzzle regarding their identities. I think they're established NPCs or even deities, and he says he's left clues in the comics about who they are.

Correct Celeste. Through careful re-reading of the comic and location of various visual and textual clues which I will later leak, you can deduce the answer. Also, you can eliminate certain characters based on them appearing with the cultists, such as Erythnul who was with other evil gods trying to kill the cultists a couple episodes ago.

If I had to guess, I'd say Ralishaz is one of 'em, and possibly Vecna, but those are just guesses based on their portfolios...

Thanks Mystic! It still needs a bit of tweaking. My playtest was a bit wonky, but then again I ran it 1st edition and I hadn't done that system in AGES. Given time I would've liked to add pregenerated victims-er, characters and some illustrations. Eh.

Sadly, Mordy is nothing more than a . . . Merchant! Shocked

Thanks 4e! Mordy could never have been a financial success without you! Evil Razz

Werewolves, Ehlonna and Obad-Hai, I know that theme. http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=936

I am sure it is in bad taste to comare artists. Maybe it is just cuz I recently read something similar in Order of the Stick, http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0742.html (“I wouldn’t call him a dwarf, but there will definitely be some spelunking involved.”), but, I can’t help but mention that the last panel was ripe for having Ronald Regan make some double entendre salamander/fire giant joke. Amusing even if I cannot come up with the puchline.
