i have looked and i cannot seem to find a "how to guide" for making prestige classes. i found some prestige classes on the internet and while there are good ones, there are also some not-so-good ones you could say. does anyone know of a how to guide for making prestige classes? i would like to take some of the themed kits from the old AD&D and create new prestige classes and before i start i was wondering if anyone has or knows where i can find some guidelines for that activity. thanks in advance.
There really isn't a standardized way to build a Prestige Class. It's more a skill (although some might call it an art ) that you become more comfortable with as you stumble along through the design process.
If you've not dabbled with them before, then a good place to start might be with some guidance from the gentlemen who (IIRC) created the concept during the 3E design process, Mr. Monte Cook.
Back in Dragon #274 he wrote an article called "Class Acts: Create Your Own Prestige Classes" which discussed what a Prestige Class is supposed to be as well as some techniques for designing them. You can buy the PDF of the magazine on Paizo's website for around $5.00 US.
It helped me get a better grasp on the process way back when. Your mileage, of course, may vary!
