I have tried several systems over the years, going way back to 1st ed. However, what I always found was most popular was the "appearance," of a system. What I mean by this is that I would have a few basic rules behind the DM screen, but would vary from it consistently to enhance the story.
If I wanted to encourage the characters to go to Zeif, then they make more money there, eventually receiving and invitation by someone. If a conflict with the local smuggling ring was desirable, then the PC would get ever growing demands for "protection," money.
I did find that the complicated systems were usually good for just a few sessions, and then interest waned. Just the learning curve was undesirable at that point.
