First Name: Matthew
Age: 41
Location: Adelaide, South Australia
Started playing: Age 11
Rules: Started with 1st Edition
Nickname: I was on the boards as Phalastar Greycloak which was a character name. My current nickname was given to me as a joke from my last two trips to the UK where I spent a good deal of time checking out a large number of castles.

A friend at primary school once tried to explain the game his older brother taught him. I didn't quite get it - I kept asking where these very exciting dungeons were. A couple of years later, friends at school were playing Boot Hill (western role playing) and I joined in, then moved to D&D.

Enjoyed all editions of the game, thought 3rd and 3.5 pathfinder were close the the pinnacle. Lost me on 4th. Open mind on 5th but predicting something close the 3rd edition with a million optional rules.

I also enjoyed answering questions not asked (apparently).

First Name: George
Age: 47
Location: Deer Park Texas (aka Houston for those that don't know Texas Cartography..... its about 40miles south east of houston)
When you started playing D&D: about 1979-80 depending on what you want to call D&D
What rules you started with: I started with chainmail. Yea. I said it.. chainmail.. hehe... I was originally drawn to the game via table top wargaming (avalon hill stuff, like Third Reich, Squad Leader, Flat Top, Wooden ships Iron men, etc) a group of friends in HS and I picked them up ( the original white then blue box/ red box ) and we began from there. I started DMing about 2 years later when we lost our DM to college, and that has been my preferred play style ever since. Die hard 2e fan, but between work demands and life "we retired our campaign" in 2001. Recently (oct2011) I returned permanently from out of country work and was urged by my son and old players to perform a Resurrection of the campaign. My only challenge as an old school guy has been converting to 3.5e (since its the preferred of 4/6 of my new players).
Where does your Forum Nick come from: Was the first PC I rolled up. (I died or did I hehe just incase my players are peaking in) DLG has since evolved into a PC nemesis.

Hahahah XD, BTW I've been DMing Greyhawk for about 3 years now, I found it searching for a setting for my games. And I had not enough money to buy a setting like the Realms. So i Bought the Gazeteer(the italian one) and then i found the wiki, and this site.

Well IMO Greyhawk is the peak of the mountain, Realms had some passive interest, but HERE in GH is where it all began and continues to grow. It was fortuitous that the lack of funds brought you to the diamond!
As for CF, Welcome and wade into the deep end of the CF pool, you will find a lifetime supply of camaraderie, knowledgeable Sages and information on the first, and the best "realm".

Hey folks. Lanthorn encouraged me to post here, so here goes.

First Name? Marc, but nowadays I normally go by Marc-Tizoc (first and middle names, which are from the French and Nahuatl languages, the latter being of the indigenous Mexica or Aztec people). (My grandparents all immigrated to the U.S. from México during the Mexican Revolution.)

Age? 37.

Location? Miami, Florida (nearby).

When you started playing D&D? Trying to answer this question accurately stumped me as I tried to stroll down memory lane, led me to study the Acaeum (which was fascinating), etc.

My best answer is that I was probably introduced to AD&D in 1982 or '83 by a neighborhood friend who was five years older than me (and whose older brother had introduced him). By '85, I had received as gifts (or purchased with carefully saved allowance) all of the extant hardcover AD&D books but very few modules because my initial purchases included the World of Greyhawk boxed set, which sparked and fed many an adventure for my friends.

I quickly became our regular DM and designed my own dungeons, towns, etc. far more often than I bought a module. Although I read the few that I bought with interest, as well as the few that Dragon published, I didn't collect Dungeon for many years -- for the same reason of enjoying immensely the creation of my own adventures / stories / situations. (I did find the adventure cards from City of Greyhawk and From the Ashes helpful in sparking ideas for me to develop.)

What rules you started with? AD&D, aka 1e. I transitioned to 2e having never played Basic D&D and resparked DMing in GH with the publication of Carl Sargent's From the Ashes with which I introduced a whole new group of players to GH who had previously played mostly in the Forgotten Realms setting.

After several years of 2e gaming, I moved away from my hometown and hence stopped gaming regularly until the launch of 3e (and its evolution to 3.5e), which I used to play new GH campaigns. (Over the years I also played numerous other RPGs published by Chaosium, FASA, Games Workshop, Hero Games, R. Talsorian Games, Steve Jackson Games, White Wolf, etc.)

I found the online Greyhawk community in 1998 when I came across the GREYALL.txt file and the old TSR folder on AOL. After lurking briefly, I began posting, and by 1999, I was GreyTalking regularly on the old listserv. (Lament the loss of Morgan Olden's GreyTalk Archives!) I also sometimes posted on GH-L, and once 3e launched I engaged the WotC fora too, as well as ENWorld a little. (Wow, I just found the GH-L archive, http://oracle.wizards.com/archives/greyhawk-l.html!) Sometime in 2000 I started helping with the second volume of the Oerth Journal. I can't believe how many issues the community has produced since! Of course, I joined Canonfire! immediately upon learning of its launch. Cool

I merely dabbled in LGH, so once the Living Greyhawk Journal stopped being published, I started falling behind the times and instead focused on my own campaigns (The Fall of Prym, set in the southern Wild Coast before the Greyhawk Wars, and Shadows on the March, set in Sterich after the GH Wars and based on Greg Vaughan's Dungeon adventures).

(I played 4e a few times with some former players in my last GH campaign but found the system lacking and inhibiting what I enjoy about RPGs.)

Where does your Forum Nick come from A simple acronym from my initials; I sometimes also post under Tizoc or Tizoc the Olman Scribe, after a long ago GT list discussion, where Gary Welsh responded wrly (in-character) to one of my queries on his posts about Night Hags of the Pomarj.

PS - I left the online GH community in 2006 and only returned tentatively to CF! last December, as evidenced in masterarminas's thread, I have returned!, but first the holidays and then work quickly ebbed my effort to return to the hobby. Now it looks like I'm here to stay -- though I'm unlikely to make a Thursday 'chat and likely will post less often once the academic year begins in a couple of weeks.

Glad you are back among us, granted, of course, that you are not one of the 'snake-men' of the equatorial jungles... (don't get me wrong, though, I love reptiles)

yours in Oerth,

mtg,

I was trying to remember whom you were. You have contributed some articles to the site as well from what I remember. Though I remember your Tizoc handle more than the current one your holding. Welcome back to the site. It's great to have you back.

Hey Allan! Yes, there original poster asked five questions, and folks have elaborated on them somewhat since.

Thanks Argon and Lanthorn. I'm definitely enjoying the return to CF! and the hobby of the imagination in general.

Lanthorn, I never developed the Tizoc the Olman Scribe character in detail but imagined he might be a wizard / cleric of Queztalcoatl. I'll have to think more about the yuant-ti pureblood angle ... Evil Grin

Wow ... it's really neat to go back to look at all of these newer posts ... it seems like forever that this thread opened up. Shocked \

mtg ... you know, I'd always assumed that it was "Magic: The Gathering". Hm. Learned something new.

We can credit DarkHerald (where the Hades is he these days?!) for this growing, comaraderie-building, informational, and ingenius thread. I encourage all new posters, whenever I come upon them (rarely before Argon or SirXaris, it seems), to add to this list.

Perhaps we should have a separate thread, along these same lines, about where we are headed, or updates???

Look back at the earlier posts, and see how far we've come and grown.

thanks Rory!

Hey everyone, this is kind of a re-introduction!

I used to post on the forums years ago and then kind of stopped for various reasons (apologies to anyone whose email I never replied to!) and then the other day I remembered Canonfire and thought I'd pop back and get re-aquainted!

I've just started a 2nd ed group up as a lot of my friends missed out on that style of gaming and had gotten too cosy (and lazy) with the 3.5 / Pathfinder systems. I'm currently running for them The Temple of Elemental Evil which was the first Greyhawk game I ever played in.

I look forward to catching up on all the posts!

Hard to say... the Big C just collected two more heads recently..... Sad but it was a self inflicted wound on their part.... when one brandishes a sword in a purple thunderstorm.... sometimes the lightning comes.
Besides ... I think Big C is more like Darius...
I'm aspiring for Methos..
"I killed. But I didn't just kill fifty, I didn't kill a hundred. I killed a thousand. I killed TEN thousand! And I was good at it. And it wasn't for vengeance, it wasn't for greed. It was because...I liked it. Cassandra was nothing. Her village was nothing. Do you know who I was? I was Death. Death on a horse. When mothers warned their children that the monster would get them, that monster was me. I was the nightmare that kept them awake at night. " Evil Grin

Since Cebrion is the purple lighting, I think we could get some big time quickening.

DLG,

You have a way to go for Methos. He's retired in a manner of speaking but still when you were one of the four horsemen you don't forget how to kill.

So we need a new topic Highlander of Oerth.

When you started playing D&D - I didn't start playing regularly until '00 with the introduction of 3ed.

What rules you started with - Keep on the Borderlands was the first module I played shortly before 3ed was released, but I'd been guffing about with 2ed for a few years already... just no one else in my home-town who played at the time.

Where does your Forum Nick come from - I played a now defunct MUD called Eternal Struggle where my main character was Vaelius; an archmage and political mover-shaker. As I do with many of my playing-characters, I start with a single word or short phrase that identifies them and then hold it in my mind until a name I like emerges. 'Valorous' was the word for Vaelius; in most ways he did not live up to the ideal.

I am, by nature, ecclectic. When I have the resources available, I'll certainly draw from 2ed for inspiration... and, I must admit to a certain amount of nostalgiac excitement that WotC is republishing some of that material. But, I must apologize... I play Pathfinder now and likely for the foreseeable future.

Hi, Just started running a circa 591 CY GH campaign using 1E AD&D a month or so ago. Currently running Against the Cult of the Reptile God, eventually plan on running the A series when the party hits 4th level.

First became heavily interested in GH during the early days of the LG campaign. Played a Half-Orc Fighter in the Duchy of Urnst during the 3.0 years.

I'm not really a newbie to the community, but haven't even been very active, and haven't properly introduced myself to most of the people here, so:

First Name - Amber

Age (Birthyear) - 30 (1982)

When you started playing D&D - 2001, In the Living Greyhawk RPGA campaign.

What rules you started with - D&D 3.0, but I've since played 3.5, Pathfinder, and a fair bit of AD&D 2nd ed. and Basic (BECMI) D&D.

Where does your Forum Nick come from - I've been too busy to do it much anymore, but I used to be a regular Ren Faire performer (I play guitar and lute), so my friends used to call me bardgirl. When I signed up for AOL for the first time way back in 97 or 98, bardgirl was taken, but skaldgirl wasn't, so I started using that as my online persona and it has stuck with me since.

Hail and Good morrow fellow Hawkers!
Welcome to Canonfire! M2A0 and Skaldgirl.

You'll find a deep well of Greyhawk info, camaraderie, and the occasional purple lightning Shocked (just follow the guidelines to avoid those Wink )

M2A0, your in good company. Several hallowed members hail from the West Coast. Cebrion (ie wielder of the purple lightning ) and Lanthorn the "Inquisitor".... hehe

Skaldgirl its always nice to see a fellow Renfester (long time Texas Renfest here) or SCA member. Especially one with Bardic Knowledge! ITs further nice to see more and more ladies with interest in the game. Yea I'm from the OLD days (Grognards as we call them here) where there were few lady gamers. You will find many prominent ladies here, Blue Witch and Anna (Demi-Goddess of Cartography) just to name a few. So don't be afraid to be "active"... and leave the skulking around in the shadowy places to us Dark Lords....... Evil Grin

Idea Lastly, as others are sure to mention in more detail, there is a Thursday evening chat session that all are welcome to sit in on. (of which I am over due in attendance) Idea

Me? Hallowed?! Happy Aw, shucks, DLG. Wink Tis, true that I am a West Coaster (not an Avenger mind you). I dwell just above Portland, OR. Don't forget that Smillan is over here, too, in the Olympia area. So, M2A0, you've got folk in your parts. As for the "Inquisitor" part...yeah, that IS true, too. Laughing

I've been to a few Georgia RenFests (WAAAY back, when I was still living in that area), and claimed a sword or two for the experience. Skaldgirl, you will find that Argon is a blend of barbarian and skald. He's quick with a pun or two while hefting that mighty axe of his. Cool

Curious about that definition...how old do you have to be to be considered a "grognard?" Perhaps another "Inquisition" query. Laughing Unless you wanna answer it here! Razz

Ditto on that account! I don't recall the last time I joined in a Greychat. It always seems that I either have a game running on those nights or something else comes up! Tonight for instance...poker! I hope that Rudd smiles on me. Daddy's got a mortgage to pay. Laughing

We've reached the Gem of the Flanness my friends!

"So keep your purses tight and your lips even tighter" - Dredd

Well met everyone!

First Name: THARIZ....ahem...(slight twitching and forced timbre) Neil

Age: 43 (1969)

Locale: GA, USA

When I started playing: 1981

Rules I started with: see date above lol (FIRST ED). But since have played using all except 4th. We actually started a roleplay group in the commons room of the local library with kids from jr. high.

Where does the nickname come from: Played a paladin forever with guys I grew up in school with. Every weekend and holiday we got our game on. Many Dr. Peppers, $1 frozen pizzas, and Cheeze Its died for the cause. When I graduated and went to the local university, I worked at a local comic shop. Guy that graduated from my same high school a year or two before my sister invited me over to game and those guys have been my best friends ever since. Heck all of the close friends I've made over the years came from D&D and Magic the Gathering sessions. Dredd was my jack of all trades / merc. Fell in with a Paladin at first because he thought they made for the best distractions and character witnesses for me to carry on my illicit activities on the side lol. I used to steal back the 10% he gave to his order on the sly and bought magical items for him with it. As I thought he was being taken advantage of and on general principle that it would help me stay alive lol. We had some great great times with those two characters.

Looking forward to talking shop with you guys, and let me say thanks for keeping Greyhawk alive for all of us. You're the best!

Feel free to join in any conversation that you'd like and check out the
Greyhawk wiki over in the left hand column. Thanks to our alumni Robbastard and Rasgon you can find just about everything "Greyhawk" there.

We look forward to your future contributions, conversation and questions!

So again, Welcome to Canonfire!

Wow,

Turn your back for one moment and four new entries to the welcome post.

I would like to welcome Vaelius, M2A0, Skaldgirl, and Dredd, to the boards.

As Lanthorn has pointed out my other alias is a bard. Follow this tread.

http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=48. Its part of the much-maligned spinecastle campaign.

I am known as Aoric in that forum as its part of a play by post campaign.

I look forward to seeing all of you on the boards. If any of you have questions check Lanthorn's posts, their full of questions that some people are afraid to ask. He's a light after all!

There are many good people on these boards and I hope you four will add to the comradery we all share here.

If you get a chance visit us on the Thursday night chats. You can join by clicking on the link to the left that reads as Greytalk Chat Now (with Java).

Please check the other forums we have one on poems and lyrics. I wonder what the Skaldgirl has to add to the tread.

Never lurking. Just a return from some dark depths. Slaying of evil most foul. I have returned, with sharpened axe and wisdom gained. Long shall the barbarian rein.

Ten Thousand Greetings!

Hi folks!
It's been an age since I was on this site, and I lost all my login information, so I just gave up, and made a new profile!

I've been playing D&D since 1977, and DMing since a week after that, so I've been through all the versions of the game. And I've played and judged many, many rules systems over the years - for a while I was a partner in a comics/game store. So D&D was a part of my life sine I was a kid, and I played up until a few years ago, when the last of my gaming friends married or left the area.

Through every iteration of D&D and all the games I've encountered, there was something about Gryhawk/Blackmoor that I have always found more interesting, more intriguing, more fascinating than any other games setting. Sure, Planescape was great, Eberron was novel, Traveler was addictive, etc. ... but I always came back to Greyhawk and Blackmoor. Was it because of their originality? Because they were the first? I don't know what hooked me.

One thing I love about Greyhawk is that there is a community like this of fellow-obsessives who are happy to make the effort to write articles to clarify and further the canon. To them goes my admiration and thanks!

I don't know what I'd be able to add to this amazing website - I've probably forgotten more than I remember hehe...But I am very happy to be back here! I look forward to getting to know everyone.

(um yeah and my rl name is Joey and I hail from NW Indiana, USA)

Welcome to Canonfire! Bugsy. We're glad you're back.

Casting Detect Alignment causes me some suspicion, however. What's that 'BANNED' above your avatar mean? Wink

I would love an answer to that query myself...since this is a new account...
I've submitted a query in Feedback.
I'm not especially evil, I don't think, but I do love old Frazetta art. And I liked Molly Hatchet as well...back in the day.

(Never mind. I'm a Novice now!)

It was probably the Molly Hatchet reference that did you in. Wink

Not sure though our resident purple lighting is a servant of entropy and can sense the presence of good or evil easily. While the Ullmaster knows whether or not you reside in Ull, and he will judge you based on your love of art or artists. Wink

All kidding aside welcome to the boards Bugsy and if you get a chance stop by the Thursday night chats and bring your Greyhawk topics with you. Just click on the link to the left which reads a Greytalk Chat Now! (with java).

I think the banned thing and errors are a part of the system that keeps n00bs from being able to spam threads, just in case that n00b is not a person but a spammer program. It is an extra level of defense. Replying to a certain number of threads first, thus allowing everyone to establish that you are real person by purposely allowing such posts to remain and not banning usernames, IPs, etc. is the usual work-around, which is why you see some of the more clever forum spammer programs actually copy/pasting portions of posts from the forums themselves, thus making them harder to notice right off, as the spam posts at least appear to be topical.

Things look to be okay now (if they are not, let me know using the feedback function), so welcome out from the shadows, and happy posting! Happy

When you started playing D&D? I had some friends back in elementary school that were playing the basic game. I saw the box and thought it was cool. When I wanted to play, I was told I couldn't because I didn't understand how, and they didn't want to teach me. Yeah, it was 5th grade, so really, how tough could it have been?

So, I put the basic set on my Christmas list, even sent a letter to Santa for it. It was that or an F16 (it was brand new back in about '79!); I was actually kinda tossed up. Well, suffice to say I got the F-16, or at least a big model. You thought I was going to get the D&D set, didn't you? Razz

So, I went throught the rest of 5th grade with no D&D. Sad However, I kissed my first girl so the year wasn't a total loss. Later that year, my oldest sister went to college in Santa Barbara. We drove down there, and I played D&D in the back of my dad's pickup with two six-sided dice and a binder of paper. That's all I had, and I totally made up my own game! Well, my folks saw that and they figured, "he REALLY wants this game." So, for my next birthday which was just around the corner, that's exactly what I received. So, in mid-1980 I finally started playing. When I hit the Junior High that year, I knew how to play. I found a group of players in my class who all had started playing that summer as well, and I never looked back!

What rules you started with? See above, but obviously that would be "MY OWN RULES!" I mean, seriously, 2 six-sided dice and a notepad, that was it! I quickly went on to Basic, and then just as quickly to ADnD. Unfortunately, my dad threw out my first box of books on accident. That's his story, and he's sticking to it! This happened at the end of high school, around '86-87. Lucky for me, that was when I had barely started working and making my own money, at least more than could buy a weekly couple of comics and a candy bar. So, I started buying books. As this was when 2nd ed came out, most of my money went into those books. I ended up with a preponderance of 2nd ed stuff, so that naturally remained my game of choice. Even though I've since compiled a pretty good collection of the 1st ed, original, and later 3rd ed stuff, I still love 2nd most of all. Well, I honestly don't think it's THAT different from the 1st ed ADnD, or at least more alike than different, but that's just me! Still, I'm definately a 2nd ed guy!

where does your Forum Nick come from? Funny that. It was the name of my father's first and only character. He humored me back in those early days, when I was just learning to use the basic set. He created a character named Ragnar, named after the legendary Swedish king. My dad's play was VERY short-lived, and I ended up taking over Ragnar as my own when I started playing ADnD. I switched him to a ranger, and thus was born Ragnar.

I've been around here for quite some time. I was part of the greytalk talklist back in the 90's, when I was at the University of New Mexico. I was rather prolific back then, with a lot of stuff that I think eventually just went away as the internet changed. There was nothing like this yet. Heck, pics took about 5 minutes to load back then. Of course, the only pics on the net were of Pamela Anderson! After college and divorce, I kinda forgot about gaming for a bit. When I rediscovered Canonfire, I was very happy. I have been around this site for years, though I didn't even know there were forums until a few years ago. I lurked forever, as I was pretty busy, especially at another forum, the Road of Kings. That's mainly for Conan stuff and Hyborian War, but I have also used it to run my PBeM (actually by forum) for the last 2 1/2 years. I've finally started to speak up around here. Hopefully, my contributions, however meagre they are, will be useful or at least interesting. If not, feel free to hit me over the head with a dead fish, fire potato crossbows at me, or feed me to the yak-men!
