Okay folks. One thing this sight lacks is some visual stimulus (no offense). There was talk about a products database that had pictures of the covers in it - that would be great.

My questions is what piece of artwork do you think is the most quintessentially Greyhawk?

A module cover, original D&D cover, LArry Elmore work, something from inside the core AD&D books?

Criteria to consider:
- where was it from, the more canon-esk the better, core books, followed by modules, followed by Dragon magazine etc.
- the subject of the artwork: a Greyhawk icon like Mordy would score well, a Greyhawk Deity, a greyhawk city
- usual artistic qualities

Thoughts?

For example "Paladin in Hell" I have always loved, but other than being in the players handbook, it is not really Greyhawk right?

I also loved 'Emirikol the Chaotic' but was he even a Greyhawk character?

I love Wayne Reynolds version of St Cuthbert. I a fan of Wayne's, so I'd probably have to pick one of his Greyhawk works, but I know a bunch of you prefer the classic era.

Whatcha got?

I have three pictures to me that says "this is Greyhawk".

1- The back picture of S1 Tomb of Horrors. It's just a iconic picture.

2- The front cover of A2 Secert of the Slavers Stockade.

3- The front cover of 1st-3rd print covers of T1 The Village of Hommlet.

Here's one. Yes, Mordy is hard to beat. The cover of Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure by Clyde Caldwell is one of my favorites. To see it parodied by Dungeon #112's Maure Castle (with Eli Tomorast on the cover) only made the original more iconic IMO.

1) Any of the pictures inside and on the cover of White Plume Mountain, especially the area map with Dead Gnoll's Eye Socket.

2) The artwork from Against the Giants and the Drow series, especially the party traveling through the underdark with a captive drow in tow.

3) Any of the pictures of Iggwilv, especially those from Fiend's Embrace (Dungeon 121) and the Savage Tide Adventure Path (Dungeon 149). Mortellan's reproduction deserves an honorable mention as well:

For me, it is the cover of Greyhawk Adventures. It was my first exposure to the campaign world, and the second or third AD&D book I ever had. In fact, much of the interior artwork takes me back to when Greyhawk to me was a blank canvass I was trying to map based on descriptions in Greyhawk Adventures.

The cover of Greyhawk adventures or the art work inside is good, as well. The artwork on the Falcon series or against the giants works for me. I'm not one for solo pictures of iconic wizards by themselves as a group or part of a battle scene then I'm in.

For me, the iconic art would be ToEE cover by Keith Parkinson. Most other art could be for almost anything, but not that. Mordy's Fantastic Adventure cover ranks up there, but I think that the pen & ink Erol Otis art of the Slave Lords trumps that one.

I also like the Gord the Rogue cover by Clyde Caldwell.

There is one thing that makes me think "Greyhawk" more than most of those, and that is the 1983 World of Greyhawk boxed set cover. And it isn't even the Easley pic of the charging knight either, but the leather cover, metal trim/corners/claps and gemstones around the border. That should have been made a feature of every single Greyhawk product released (at least they got it on few things).

Allan, I've never seen that last picture of Drelnza before. Is it published in an adventure or is it only available from Jeff Easley?

And, you're correct - Drelnza's fake sleep under the Lanthorn is definately a classic. Evil Grin

I've always liked Jeff Easley's art Happy

I'd say his art for the covers of Iuz the Evil and The City of Skulls are some of my favorites.

For me, Greyhawk is by default black & white in art terms.

In play terms, it's every colour under the sun, (and a few that aren't under the sun).
